Unique Amazonian Rainforest
The Iwokrama Rainforest forms part of the Guiana Shield, which is one of the oldest geological formations in South America. Situated on the northern edge of the Amazon rainforest, it is not located in the central Amazon basin as in Brazil, but is often considered, ecologically and geographically, to be part of the wider Amazon region. This remarkable forest therefore acts as a link between different ecosystems, boasting rich biodiversity and a landscape that remains relatively unspoilt. Iwokrama embodies a unique collaboration between nature, science and the local communities living here.
The Guiana Shield
The Guiana Shield is one of the oldest geological regions in South America. This vast area stretches across parts of Guyana, Venezuela, Suriname and Brazil. It forms the basis of high plateaus and dense rainforests that are rich in biodiversity. The Shield plays a vital role in the conservation of natural water sources and is home to unique ecosystems that have often remained virtually untouched by humans. Owing to its geological and ecological significance, it is a key area for research and conservation in the north of the continent.
Iwokrama Canopy Walkway
This suspension bridge structure amongst the treetops gives you the chance to experience the rainforest from a different perspective. At a height of around 30 metres, you walk from platform to platform, surrounded by the canopy. This is where the forest is at its most vibrant: scarlet macaws, toucans, golden-bellied organists and various species of monkey are regularly spotted, as are tree snakes and other animals that usually keep themselves hidden. In the early morning or towards the end of the day, you’re most likely to experience this wildlife up close high in the forest.

Atta Rainforest Lodge
Deep in the rainforest, at the foot of Mount Iwokrama, lies the small-scale Atta Rainforest Lodge. Here, you’ll be surrounded by unspoilt nature, with direct access to the famous Canopy Walkway. The lodge has eight rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom featuring an open-air shower. The Atta Lodge is perfect for those who want to wake up early to the sounds of the jungle, go birdwatching and, in the evening, reflect on the day’s events in complete tranquillity.

On the banks of the Essequibo River, in the heart of the rainforest, lies the Iwokrama River Lodge. The eight comfortable cabins, each with a veranda and a hammock, offer views of the water. Accompanied by experienced guides, you’ll explore the forest, spot birds and cruise down the river at sunrise. Here, it feels as though time stands still for a moment.
