An impression of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

This hidden city, later called Machu Picchu, was accidentally discovered by American Hiram Bingham in 1911.

He was looking for the legendary city of Vilcabamba, when local farmers pointed him to some ruins on a hill, overgrown by a subtropical rainforest. The discovery of this city is one of the most important archaeological finds of the twentieth century. Not only is the city impressive because of its different buildings, but it is also the spectacular location that makes this place so special.

Huayna Picchu

From the Huayna Picchu, in the Inca language of Quechua; ‘young mountaintop’, there is a breathtaking view of Machu Picchu. The Huayna Picchu is an unmistakably high mountain (2700 metres) on the north side of Machu Picchu. Climbing the Huayna Picchu is not allowed without permission, if you want to do this you’ll have to make a reservation beforehand. It is physically taxing, but definitely worth the effort!

Machu Picchu is actually right on the border of the Andes and the Amazonian area, at an altitude of 2500 metres. You can travel from Cuzco to the town of Aguas Calientes by train in four hours. From there you take the bus, around 20 minutes, to Machu Picchu. Our (English speaking) guides will inform you about Machu Picchu and the Inca culture.

For the more athletic types there is the possibility of walking the so-called Inca Trail. You’ll walk over the world famous Inca paths, sleep in tents in the middle of nature and as your ultimate highlight, the sunrise over Machu Picchu! There are several different versions of this trek, let our travel specialist advise you.
