What a marvellous region! Definitely a recommendation to include it in your trip...

Orange Walk, in Belize’s north, is an imposing jungle area with lagoons, rivers and a diverse flora and fauna (lots of birds!).

This region’s highlight are the temples of Lamanai. In the Mayan language Lamanai means ‘flooded crocodile’. Lamanai was one of the larger cities in the Mayan empire. Only the largest temples can still be seen, the rest of the city lies hidden in the jungle. The view from the higher temples is extraordinary!

Another important archaeological site is ‘Altun Ha’; a city from the classic Mayan period that had over 10.000 inhabitants at its peak. The city was accidentally discovered in 1963 by amateur pilot and amateur archaeologist Hal Ball.
