Salvador lies in a beautiful setting of tropical nature and has over 34 kilometres of heavenly beach. This colonial city swings; it is the heart of the Afro-Brazilian culture.

The full name of Salvador is; São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos, or rather ‘Holy saviour of the bay of All Saints’. Salvador is the 3rd largest city of the country after Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Salvador was the capitol of Brazil until 1763.

The development of Salvador was strongly influenced by the large number of slaves that came from Africa to Salvador to work on the many (sugarcane) plantations that surrounded the city. The majority of the current inhabitants are mulatto’s and black people who are virtually all descended from the considerable slave population at the time.

From Salvador, Capoeira has gained fame in Brazil. The Capoeira is originally an African martial art that was imported by the slaves. The sport was forbidden during the rule of president/dictator Getúlio Vargas because of its violent nature. However, these days the sport is being practised again.

The historical upper town of Salvadar has a large number of wonderful colonial buildings on a relatively small area. This part of town, the Pelourinho area, called Pelô by the locals, is also the beating heart of the city’s entertainment. In 1985 UNESCO added the historical upper town to the world heritage list and it was beautifully restored in 1990.
