4 weeks | 5 countries | 7000 kilometers

During the South AmeriCar 2016 we drove from the Peruvian capital Lima via a spectacular route to the famous Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, in just four weeks.

We started the trip in the desert coast of Peru. After visiting the Nasca lines we drove through the Andes, from where we headed for the Sacred Valley. We passed over heights of 4500 meters. The vastness and emptiness of the Peruvian highlands interspersed with fertile valleys and small traditional villages. We had the opportunity to visit the famous Inca city Machu Picchu and the colonial city of Cuzco, without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in South America. We drove along the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, that we even crossed with a small ferry boat.

In Bolivian we drove through the bustling metropolis of La Paz, where we awaited an explosion of scents, colors and sounds. After that we traveled to the Atacama Desert in Chile, which ranks as the driest place on earth. To arrive at this desert, we had to cross a high mountain pass with a border post at 4600 meters altitude. We passed majestic volcanic peaks and small mountain lakes, where flocks of flamingos live and where herds of vicuña's come to drink. From the charming town of San Pedro de Atacama, a small oasis in the middle of the desert, we traveled to Argentina. Again a spectacular mountain pass with endless views was waiting for us. We passed a few salt lakes and eventually we reached, via a beautiful mountain road and through an unique piece of subtropical rainforest, the Argentinean city Salta. After we left the Andes behind us, we were introduced to the endless pampas of Argentina.

Before we crossed the border with Brazil, we could see the remains ofthe  historic Jesuit Mission Stations and the Argentinean side of the Falls. In Brazil we had the overnights in the National Park, in a truly unique place within walking distance of the thundering mass of water. Entirely rightly these falls are declared one of the seven natural wonders of the world. We even managed to get permission to bring the cars in the National Park!

The last part of our trip took us in Sao Paulo, the economic heart of South America, and before we reached Rio, we experienced two wonderful dream stages through the Mata Atlantica rainforest, where we made a stop in the picturesque coastal town of Paraty. With the arrival at the Copacabana we experienced our "Grande Finale" of this dream trip with your own car!
