Dense jungle and stalactite caves

This region in the west of the country, on the border with Guatemala, boasts some stunning landscapes, ranging from wild rainforest to rolling hills of farmland dotted with plantations, surrounded by numerous rivers and caves. For nature lovers, there is the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, where you can enjoy the beautiful coniferous forest, waterfalls, caves and natural pools.

In the unspoilt natural surroundings of the Cayo District, you can enjoy a wide range of activities such as horse riding, canoeing, exploring caves, walking and mountain biking.

Belize is rich in caves that were once used by the Maya people for various rituals and ceremonies. One of the most spectacular is the Actun Tunichil Muknal, or ‘Cave of the Stone Tomb’. Exploring the cave system is quite an adventure. To reach the underground cathedral, measuring 300 by 50 metres, where the sacrificial ceremonies once took place, you’ll need to swim, climb and scramble.

Caracol, one of the finest ancient Mayan temples in Belize, lies deep in the heart of the Cayo District. This site covers an area of almost 25,000 hectares and is impressive not only for its size, but also for its vast agricultural field system and extensive urban planning. Caracol is one of the most unspoilt and well-maintained Mayan sites in Belize. Tip: The view from the Canaã temple is stunning!

Uniquely situated in the heart of Mountain Pine Ridge National Park on the banks of the river, where waterfalls tumble into beautiful turquoise lakes in the rainforest. If you travel further north, you’ll find yourself in another remarkable region: Orange Walk. An impressive jungle area with lagoons, rivers and a rich variety of flora and fauna. One of the highlights of this region is the temples of Lamanai, which means ‘flooded crocodile’. Only the largest temples remain to be admired, as the rest of the city is still hidden away in the jungle. The view from the high temples is magnificent!
