Johan, founder of Sapa Pana Travel, loves to advise you about driving in Brazil. He drove, with its own Dutch car, through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and of course Brazil, of course. By now he drove already more than 50.000 km through South America!

Petra, our travel specialist, is Brazilian herself! Already at a very young age she traveled a lot with her parents and you can imagine there's a lot to drive in Brazil.... Nowadays, when travelling back to 'her' country, she still drives a lot. Traveling with a car helps her enormously in discovering new beautiful locations.

The Transamazonica, or Rodovia Transamazonica (BR-230), is a circa 4000 km long highway which runs from the Northeast of Brazil (João Pessoa) through the Amazone (Lábrea). Initially (in 1972) the idea was to end this highway in Peru. But unfortunately due to financial reasons this was never reached. A large part of the Transamazonica is unpaved. You'll find the best paved parts of this road nearby the city of Altamira.

Costa Verde

Why this region is named Costa Verde, or 'green coast' most probably needs no explanation. The azure sea with many beaches and the thousands of acres of emerald green pristine tropical forest are the two most notable features of this region. At times the people of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro love to jump in the car and take the BR-101 highway towards the Costa Verde. The approximately 500-kilometer winding road offers spectacular views of the South Atlantic Ocean with beautiful beaches and stunning green mountains with in the background unique blue skies. You'll drive along villages and small cities, including the beautiful colonial town of Paraty. Good to know; from November to March, summer at the southern hemisphere, is the high season in this region. During the winter at the southern hemisphere, the BR-101, near Paraty and Caraguatatuba, is sometimes affected by landslides and fog. Throughout the year there is a lot of traffic between Sao Paulo and Sao Jose dos Campos.

The possibilities in terms of car journeys are enormous in Brazil. Driving the Transamazonica and the Costa Verde is spectaculair, but there is much more! Some inspirational journeys with fantastic self drive routes are already on our website.

You can always contact us and we'll work an inspiring personal travel program for you. Our trips are tailor-made, thus completely adapted to your personal wishes. Of course, we take into account any previous experience with driving in Latin America.
