New Year's Eve, an expensive time to travel to Rio, but very special to experience!

The name itself already makes it feel exotic!

Rio de Janeiro, also called ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’, the miraculous city. Not without reason, because what other city can boast that right in its midst big waves of green fall softly into corners and creeks, bays and coves? At what other place do the hills and mountains rise from the sea and the land so steeply and in such strange, unlikely and unforgettable shapes?

The name Rio de Janeiro means ‘January River’ in Portuguese. When the Portuguese explorer Gaspar de Lemos discovered the Guanabara Bay on 1 January 1502, he thought it was the mouth of a river, hence the name.

Rio de Janeiro was the capitol of Brazil until 1960. Rio de Janeiro knows a large socio-economical inequality. A part of the city matches up to the modern Western metropolises, but millions of people live in slums, also called ‘favelas’. Favelas lie spread through the city, sometimes only a few hundred metres away from exclusive residential areas. They are usually built on hillsides that are too steep for regular house-construction.

Consider visiting Rio de Janeiro during your made-to-measure trip, it is definitely worth it. Enjoy the highlights combined with a stay in a special hotel. There is a lot of choice in hotels, your travel specialist is happy to advise you. Rio de Janeiro is famous for its beaches, such as Copacabana and Ipanema, the giant Christ the Redeemer statue on the 710 metre high Corcovado Mountain and the so-called Sugarloaf Mountain. Rio de Janeiro is home to four football teams that play in the highest competition. The Maracaña is one of the largest football stadiums in the world. The exuberant carnival is visited by thousands of tourists every year.

In July 2012, the city of Rio de Janeiro was added to the World Heritage list of UNESCO.
