Best time to visit Patagonia: October to early May
The best time to visit Patagonia is from October to early May. The rest of the year is winter in Patagonia, which means lower temperatures and shorter days. Furthermore, there are fewer flights to the south and accommodation is closed.
Good to know: be prepared for four seasons in a single day
If you’re planning a trip to Patagonia, bear in mind that the region is situated in the very south. Relatively speaking, it’s not far from Antarctica. You won’t find tropical temperatures there, but in summer temperatures can reach around 25 degrees.
Due to the mountains and the wind blowing in from Antarctica, the weather can change rapidly. Patagonia is also known as a region where you can experience all four seasons in a single day. For example, Johan has sometimes walked around in a T-shirt in October, which is spring. Meanwhile, it’s not unusual to find yourself in a snow shower one afternoon in summer. So bear in mind that the weather in Patagonia is never entirely predictable. We therefore recommend wearing layers.
As well as everything being in bloom, this is also a lovely time to travel, as it’s still quiet at this time of year. The accommodation you’d like to stay in – and which we love to work with – is available, and flight tickets are generally better value.
Summer from December to March
This is the peak season in Argentina and Chile, as the local population are also on holiday. Summer is undoubtedly a very good time to visit Patagonia. As Patagonia has the opposite seasons to us in the Netherlands, it is an excellent destination for a trip during our Christmas period. Do bear in mind, however, that if you wish to travel during this period, you should start your preparations well in advance. Accommodation gets booked up more quickly and flight tickets are more expensive. It is best to book a trip to Patagonia for the Christmas holidays between one year and eight months in advance.

Autumn in April and early May
These months aren’t generally considered the best time to travel south. However, we think autumn is an excellent time to visit Patagonia. The days are getting shorter and it can get quite chilly, particularly in the evenings, but as the wind is often less strong during these weeks, it’s generally very pleasant during the day. Anke was in Patagonia at the end of April last year and enjoyed lovely, calm weather. The forests were a veritable palette of colours and the light on the glaciers was stunning.
