Cienfuegos
Cienfuegos was founded in 1819 by French colonists under the name Fernandina de Jagua, making the city just over 200 years old. As the city centre dates back to that period, it has its own distinctive architecture and street layout, which differs from what you will see in other Cuban cities. This gives Cienfuegos, just like Trinidad and Santa Clara, a character all of its own, making it well worth a visit.

A young city
Visit José Martí Central Park and the adjacent Tomás Terry Theatre. Cienfuegos is only 200 years old and was founded by immigrants of French descent. As a result, the architectural style of the historic buildings in the city centre differs from that of other Cuban cities.

Delicious fresh fish
Take a boat trip through the Bahía de Jagua to Castillo de Jagua. In this small fishing village, you can enjoy delicious fresh fish whilst looking out over the Caribbean Sea. Villa Lagarto is definitely a must-visit!

Extravagant villas
Take a stroll along the Malecón, lined with the extravagant villas of the wealthy families of yesteryear. Cienfuegos used to be one of Cuba’s richest cities, and this is clearly evident here. The Palacio de Valle, built in Moorish style, is the jewel in the crown of this boulevard.

Casa de la Cultura
The Casa de la Cultura is situated on the south-western corner of José Martí Park. It’s well worth popping in. There’s often live music playing. From the observation tower, you’ll have a lovely view over the square.
