Along the Peruvian coast

Off the rugged coastline of Paracas flows the famous Humboldt Current, an ocean current that flows from southern Chile along the west coast of South America. This current is extremely rich in nutrients and therefore attracts a wealth of wildlife, including various species of birds, sea lions, penguins, pelicans, flamingos, dolphins and, occasionally, whales. You can visit the small Ballestas archipelago by boat to see the abundant wildlife up close.

Huacachina is not far from Ica and is a small oasis in the middle of the desert. Lake Huacachina, whose waters are said to have healing properties, is surrounded by a beautiful landscape of palm trees, ‘huarangos’ (acacias) and dunes.

Here you will find the world-famous life-size figures carved into the arid landscape. The best way to view these figures and lines is from above, on a flight in a small aeroplane. The how and why of these figures, some of which are up to 900 metres wide, remain a mystery. Some of the lines are simple geometric designs, but there are also beautifully detailed animals, such as hummingbirds, lizards, condors, monkeys and spiders.

Near the towns of Ica and Huacachina, you’ll find some of the largest sand dunes in the world. The best way to experience this landscape is by sandboarding or driving through the dunes in buggies.
