The Realm of the Incas
Scents, colours and local markets
Before the arrival of the Europeans, the vast Inca Empire was ruled from Cuzco. The Sacred Valley surrounding it was also of great importance to this people. Today, the land of the Incas is one of the most visited areas in Peru. This is hardly surprising, as the ancient Inca culture is still very much alive here and, as a traveller, you can enjoy the scents, colours and local markets.
Cusco, the centre of the world
Cusco is situated at an altitude of around 3,500 metres and, upon arrival, you may experience some mild discomfort due to the thin air here. This is nothing to worry about – it’s a good reason to take it a bit easier for a while and enjoy your trip all the more. We recommend staying in the historic centre of Cuzco, so that all the sights are within walking distance. When you set out to explore Cuzco on your own, be sure to stroll to the beautiful Plaza de Armas, with the Cathedral and the Jesuit Church situated nearby. Have a cup of coffee in one of the little cafés above the colonnade that surrounds the square, take in the colourful array of scents and colours, and enjoy the lively blend of past and present. Cuzco’s charm will make you want to stay longer than you originally planned.
The Sacred Valley boasts a pleasant climate, breathtakingly beautiful natural scenery and picturesque villages. We highly recommend staying in this region in one of the unique accommodation options available here. It is also an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding area. Visit the colourful indigenous villages, go for walks in the countryside, try mountain biking, horse riding or rafting. In short, there’s plenty to do here.
