A warm heart for the HoPe Foundation
Ever since Sapa Pana Travel was founded, we have held the HoPe Foundation close to our hearts. Peru, and with it the work of the HoPe Foundation, has also been hit hard by the coronavirus. That is why we would like to draw attention to the remarkable work carried out by founder Walter Meekes and his team. We’d love to tell you more about the HoPe Foundation, its current situation in Peru, and how you too can show your support for the HoPe Foundation simply by casting your vote.

Cast your vote and show your support for the HoPe Foundation
Through the ‘Warm Heart’ campaign, KRO-NCRV makes a generous donation to three charities every year. This year, the HoPe Foundation is one of the nominees for this donation. The campaign focuses on charities that make a special contribution to a caring society in which we look out for one another. The five charities with the most votes stand a chance of receiving a donation of €2,500, €5,000 or €10,000.

About the HoPe Foundation
Since 1991, the HoPe Foundation has been committed to helping the most disadvantaged children and families in Cusco and the surrounding area. Through projects focusing on education, food provision and healthcare, the HoPe Foundation aims to ensure that these families can lift themselves out of poverty and live independently. It is important that this is done in a way that fits within their own environment and culture. The needs and requests of the local population are therefore central to the HoPe Foundation’s projects.
One of the main causes of this poverty is that a large proportion of the population in the mountain villages has very little command of the Spanish language. As a result, they are unable to participate in social developments. Education and learning the Spanish language are therefore among the HoPe Foundation’s top priorities. Over the past 30 years, working alongside the local community, they have built more than 160 schools in remote mountain villages, giving thousands of children access to primary and secondary education.

The HoPe Foundation developed a bilingual, intercultural education programme. This is based on the indigenous villages’ own languages and cultures. Teaching methods and learning materials were drawn up in Quechua and Spanish. Today, the government has adopted virtually all of these educational programmes. It promotes bilingual, intercultural education and publishes its own teaching materials in the various languages spoken in Peru.

The current situation in Peru
Over the past 30 years, the HoPe Foundation has, through trial and error, achieved great successes for and with the local population. Unfortunately, the coronavirus has also caused a great deal of damage in Peru.
Peru is currently in its second lockdown. As people in Peru’s mountain villages often rely on daily wages, they currently have no income, no food and little access to healthcare. Another distressing consequence of the lockdown is that domestic violence is on the rise once again. The HoPe team in Peru is working hard to do as much as possible for the local population during the lockdown. They are running educational programmes and construction projects, and HoPe has succeeded in setting up a food programme in collaboration with other NGOs. Their dedication is truly admirable.
