All on my own at the Iguaçu Falls
It’s seven o’clock in the morning and I’m on my way out. As soon as I step outside, I hear the sounds of the Mata Atlântica rainforest. I can hear a few birds chirping and, in the background, a thunderous roar. It’s that thunderous roar I’m heading towards. I’m staying at the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas. This is the only hotel situated within the Iguaçu National Park, within walking distance of the falls.
A magical experience
At this time of day, the national park is still closed to the general public. As the Hotel das Cataratas is situated within the nature reserve, only guests of the hotel are able to visit the Iguaçu Falls at this time of day. Naturally, I’m not going to let this opportunity go to waste, so I set off on my walk towards the thundering cascade.
When I arrive at the falls, I realise I really am the only one there. For a moment, I have this impressive natural spectacle all to myself. It feels almost like a magical experience. The rising sun illuminates the water as it plunges down from the Argentine side. I look around at the stunning natural scenery.
In the midst of nature’s fury
To the left of the viewing point, a path leads me down to the base of the falls. I take my time. Each time, I think the latest view is even more beautiful than all the previous ones. Once I’ve reached the base of this water-filled natural spectacle, I find a footbridge there that takes me to the centre of the falls. I still haven’t come across anyone else here. I feel privileged to be having this unique experience. After half an hour, I see some of my travelling companions walking towards me. They have big smiles on their faces. They, too, are enjoying this unforgettable moment.
The Iguaçu Falls
The Iguaçu Falls consist of more than 270 waterfalls. This natural spectacle is situated at the tri-border area shared by Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. In terms of water volume, the Iguaçu Falls are considered the largest waterfalls in the world.
Staying overnight at Belmond das Cataratas
This beautiful pink hotel, built in the Portuguese colonial style, is the only hotel situated within the Iguaçu National Park. The hotel first opened its doors in 1958. In 2007, it was completely renovated by Belmond Hotels. Without a doubt, this is one of the most spectacularly situated hotels in the world.
