An oasis in sparkling Cartagena
My favourite spot in Cartagena de Indias is Plaza San Diego, a charming little square in the historic walled city centre. Here, leafy trees provide shade for street vendors who, due to the tropical heat, have abandoned their usual zeal for selling their wares. This little oasis in the city centre is surrounded by colourful historic buildings, some of which house excellent restaurants. On the corner of this charming spot, the historic terracotta-coloured monastery walls form the façade of the Sofitel Santa Clara.
The best place to be
As I walk through the large, solid wooden gate into the hotel, I feel surrounded by the grandeur of times long past. This hotel is one of my favourite places to stay in Cartagena de Indias. Its location makes it the perfect base for exploring the historic centre, whilst also offering every comfort for a chance to completely unwind in a delightful spot on the Caribbean coast. When, in the late afternoon, the sun begins to set over the Caribbean Sea, the terrace at the Boticario Bar is the best place to be for romantics. As I sip a freshly prepared refajo (a Colombian cocktail), the balmy sea breeze provides a little relief from the heat.
Atmospherically lit
Thick monastery walls with galleries encircle a lush, leafy courtyard. It reinforces my sense of having arrived at an oasis, and I can hardly imagine a better place to enjoy my breakfast. In the evening, this courtyard is beautifully lit, and guests can enjoy delicious dishes served by the Jardin Santa Clara restaurant. The beautiful swimming pool, surrounded by palm trees, covers an area of 260 m² and is by far the largest in the city – a definite highlight of this hotel.
Strolling along the city walls
Cartagena is a city you simply must experience. The best way to get to know it is on foot. Explore the bustling streets of the historic centre, take a look around the colourful Getsemani district and stroll along the ancient city walls. The hustle and bustle of the city and the many wonderful impressions you’ll gather may prove a little tiring, but fortunately your comfortable hotel is never far away and the spa is excellent.
