Bird paradise Costa Rica
Costa Rica is known worldwide as a destination with impressive biodiversity, and this is particularly true of its birdlife. The country is home to around 900 bird species, accounting for around 10 per cent of all known bird species worldwide. This diversity makes Costa Rica a unique destination for birdwatchers and nature travellers.

Although the number of endemic bird species is relatively limited, many species find their primary habitat within the borders of Costa Rica and the surrounding regions. From the colourful toucans to the many species of hummingbirds and the iconic Resplendent Quetzal, the country offers a wide range of remarkable species that are hard to find in other parts of the world.
Thanks to its variety of ecosystems – ranging from rainforests and cloud forests to wetlands and coastal areas – Costa Rica offers a wealth of opportunities to observe birds in their natural habitat. This rich diversity, combined with well-protected nature reserves, makes the country a leading destination for ornithologists and nature lovers seeking unique travel experiences.
The Resplendent Quetzal
This magnificent bird, belonging to the trogon family, is known for its vibrant colours and the males’ long tail feathers. Although the quetzal is also found in other countries in Central America, in Costa Rica it is mainly found in the cloud forests of Monteverde and Los Quetzales National Park.
Yellow-winged Macaw
With its striking red, yellow and blue plumage, it is one of the most recognisable birds in Costa Rica. This macaw is mainly found in areas such as Carara National Park and the Osa Peninsula, where they are often seen soaring through the air in pairs. Alongside the Yellow-winged Macaw, the Green Macaw – also known as the ‘Great Soldier Macaw’ – is a rare species found in Costa Rica. This impressive macaw is mainly found on the Caribbean coast, in areas such as Sarapiquí and the Manzanillo Reserve, where it maintains its habitat in the rainforests.
Emerald Arassari
The emerald toucanet is a colourful species of toucan that shines in Costa Rica’s tropical rainforests. With its vibrant green, red and yellow plumage, it is a striking sight in areas such as Sarapiquí and Carara National Park. This bird is very sociable, living in small groups and feeding on fruit, insects and small vertebrates.
Hummingbirds
Costa Rica is home to more than 57 species of hummingbirds, including several native species such as the Mangrove Hummingbird. These small birds can be found in a variety of habitats, from tropical rainforests to mountainous regions, where they feed on nectar and contribute to local biodiversity.
Toucans
No fewer than six species of toucan live in Costa Rica, including the Sulphur-breasted Toucan and Swainson’s Toucan. These colourful birds, known for their large beaks, can be found in various forest areas across the country, from lowland rainforests to cloud forests in mountainous regions.
Broad-billed Motmot
The Broad-billed Motmot is a hidden gem of Costa Rica’s cloud forests. The bird stands out for its robust beak and vibrant colours. This shy bird, often found in the dense vegetation of Monteverde and Braulio Carrillo, hunts silently for insects and small reptiles. A rare but fascinating sight for birdwatchers.
Best spots for birdwatching in Costa Rica
Costa Rica has protected nature reserves spread across the whole country. We’d like to give you an overview of the best places to admire Costa Rica’s rich birdlife:
- Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
This cloud forest is renowned as a prime spot for spotting the Resplendent Quetzal, as well as hummingbirds. The Magnificent Hummingbird and the Violet-crowned Woodnymph are frequently seen here. The Black-billed Toucan and the Emerald Arassari are also regularly spotted here. - Manuel Antonio National Park
This popular park on the Pacific coast is ideal for spotting toucans and macaws. The Yellow-winged Macaw and Swainson’s Toucan are commonly found in this area. The Amazonian Black-throated Trogon and the White-headed Woodpecker can also be found here. - Tortuguero National Park
Tortuguero is also home to a rich variety of birdlife. Birds such as the sulphur-breasted toucan, Buffon’s macaw and various species of heron are often seen here, as is the kingfisher. As well as its many bird species, Tortuguero is also famous for its sea turtles. - Los Quetzales National Park
As the name suggests, this park is an excellent place to spot the iconic Resplendent Quetzal. Visitors can also find the Cabanis’ Thrush and the Black-masked Solitary, alongside numerous other forest birds. - Palo Verde National Park
This park in the Guanacaste region is a hotspot for waterbirds, particularly during the dry season. Species found here include the red spoonbill, the jabiru and various types of heron. The yellow-winged macaw can also be seen in this area. - Corcovado National Park
Situated on the Osa Peninsula, Corcovado National Park is one of the most biodiverse places on earth. The park is home to more than 400 species of birds, including the harpy eagle, the yellow-winged macaw, the great spotted buzzard and the crested guan. This is also a top destination for birdwatchers.
