“ A place brimming with adventure activities, stunning natural beauty and unique experiences you won’t soon forget ”
Arenal Volcano
An absolute highlight of La Fortuna is the active Arenal volcano, which towers over the landscape at a height of 1,670 metres. It is one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes.
The volcano has a striking, symmetrical conical shape and has often featured in the media in the past due to its eruptions, which occurred regularly until 2010. Today, the volcano is calmer, but it remains an impressive and dynamic natural wonder.
Although climbing the volcano itself is not always possible due to its activity, visitors can explore Arenal National Park, where well-marked trails lead through the volcanic landscape. These walking routes offer views of lava flows and the surrounding countryside, and provide a good insight into the volcano’s geological power. The summit of the volcano is often shrouded in clouds, making it difficult to get a clear view.
Plenty of activities in La Fortuna
As well as hiking in Arenal National Park, there is so much more to experience in La Fortuna and the surrounding area!
Visit one of the hot springs
Those looking to relax can enjoy the natural hot springs that originate from the geothermal activity of the Arenal volcano. The mineral-rich water rises naturally to the surface and is used for relaxing baths. The warmth of the water has a soothing effect on muscles and joints, and can help reduce stress. A popular spot is Tabacón, which offers visitors the chance to relax amidst a stunning volcanic landscape. These hot springs are also ideal for recovery after a day full of adventure and sporting activities.
