Roque Sevilla is a true nature lover. That is why he has devoted his entire life to preserving the rich flora and fauna of his native Ecuador. At his small-scale lodge, nestled in the heart of the lush jungle of the Mashpi Forest, he is delighted to share that love with his guests.

1. Why is the area around Mashpi Lodge so special?

Roque: “The Mashpi Lodge is situated right between the cloud forest and the tropical rainforest. This creates a remarkable interplay of nature. Wherever you look, you’ll see diverse, surprising and brightly coloured wildlife. The hotel’s location is therefore the key to the ultimate experience in a diverse natural area".

2. How did you end up here?

“I knew that this particular stretch of forest was under threat, so to prevent that from happening, I bought it in 2000. It was only later, when I took my family and friends to this area and realised they absolutely loved the place, that I decided I had to do something with it. The result was the Mashpi Lodge.”

3. What makes the Mashpi Lodge so unique?

"The lodge is constructed mainly of glass, allowing all guests to be in close contact with this incredible forest. Over the years, we have developed the accommodation and its surroundings in a natural way. From the outside, the lodge blends into its surroundings, whilst the interior is minimalist and decorated in earthy tones. We have also created treetop trails, and our guides lead guests along natural walking paths and past waterfalls. These walks make it easier to spot unusual plants and trees, more than 500 species of birds, monkeys and, if you’re lucky, pumas.”

4. Nature conservation is important, but how do you ensure it?

"Because our guides take guests to the most special spots in the cloud and rainforest every day, they are able to keep a close eye on the area. As well as running the hotel, we operate a research centre, which has enabled us to learn a great deal about the forest in recent years. Take the Mashpi frog, for example – we discovered this species just a year ago. Thanks to the combination of the hotel and the research centre, we can show our guests these remarkable species first-hand.”

5. What do you think the future holds for Mashpi Lodge and Ecuador?

"Mashpi is a prime example of Ecuador’s enormous potential. There is so much we can do to preserve our country’s ecosystems. These places must be protected. This is in the interests of both nature and tourism. If we are able to prioritise these two aspects, then I am certain that, for the true nature lover, Ecuador is one of the most attractive countries in the world!”
