In a lush, green land of hills. Unbelievable – what a feast for the eyes this is. In the final hours before reaching Ecuador, the landscape had already become greener and we were climbing quite steeply again. The shades of green that filled my vision were overwhelming.
The best time to visit a traditional market in Ecuador is early in the morning. There’s plenty to see as the stalls are being set up; it’s still quiet and the colours are at their most vibrant.
Today’s journey was breathtaking (and not just because the air was thin). Stunning mountain passes and high plateaus. We also saw lots of wildlife. At an altitude of 4,300 metres, by a mountain lake, we spotted flamingos: we hadn’t expected to see them there.
We ended up in a traffic chaos that you had better laugh at. Within 5 minutes, we had lost 2 cars. After all, you just have to keep driving and hope the other one stops. They do, 5 centimetres from your bumper.

The landscape is bizarre. These towering mountains are truly impressive. And the further you drive into the countryside, the more colours you begin to make out.
When I arrive at the falls, I realise I really am the only one there. For a moment, I have this impressive natural spectacle all to myself. It feels almost like a magical experience.
