Versatile nature

A landmark of Costa Rica is the Arenal volcano. From the town of Fortuna, you have a panoramic view of the spectacular Arenal volcano, which erupted violently in 1968 and continued to erupt almost daily until 2010. Although the volcano is currently dormant, with its almost perfect conical shape, it rises majestically above the meadows and forests on the eastern shore of Lake Arenal.

The lush rainforest seems to fade into the Pacific Ocean on the western side of the country. The coastline is rugged, featuring both large and smaller idyllic beaches. The tropical rainforest of Manuel Antonio is home to many animal species. Here you’ll find, amongst others, squirrel monkeys, white-shouldered capuchin monkeys, sloths and raccoons. Not far from Manuel Antonio lies Quepos, where there is a wide selection of good hotels.

For those who love unspoilt, natural beauty, far away from the hustle and bustle, southern Costa Rica is a top destination. These natural treasures are so remote that they are best reached by boat or small aeroplane. There are very few villages in this region, but there are a number of lodges offering surprisingly sophisticated facilities near the parks and along the waterfront.

One such place is Playa Cativo. This lodge is situated in the heart of the unspoilt wilderness of southern Costa Rica, yet the beach is just a stone’s throw away. The Monteverde Institute carries out extensive research into the rainforest ecosystem in this region. You can visit not only the rainforest itself, but also the institute. For example, you can visit a native plant nursery to learn more about reforestation techniques and tree species. You can also do your bit by helping with maintenance work and creating a space where seeds can germinate.

Volcanoes, mountain peaks, lush forests and coffee plantations. The central highlands lie on a plateau at an altitude of around 1,000 metres. The surrounding area offers wonderful routes to explore in a rental car. Think of the Ruta de los Santos and the Orosi Valley, along winding mountain roads where you’ll pass volcanoes, coffee plantations, meadows with cattle and, at higher altitudes, pine trees.

The Guanacaste region is home to a number of volcanoes, including Rincón de la Vieja, meaning ‘the old woman’s corner’. Rincón de la Vieja has no fewer than nine connected craters. The park, with its mud pools, hot springs and sky-blue waterfalls, is perhaps one of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets.
