Best time to visit Honduras

You can visit Honduras all year round, but the best time to go is between December and May during the dry season. As the country is close to the equator, it is almost always warm and has only two seasons.

In brief:

The dry season runs from November to April;
The rainy season runs from May to October, but don’t let that put you off travelling during this time, as the showers are usually limited to the afternoon;
The Bay Islands are an exception to these seasons: the dry season here runs from February to September;
Temperatures fluctuate throughout the year, averaging between 25 and 30 degrees, depending on which area you are in.

The climate in San Pedro de Sula is tropical (rainforest). As a result, it is warm all year round and humidity is high. There is also rainfall throughout the year, although most of the rain falls during the rainy season from May to November, with rainfall peaking in September and October. During the rainy season, this area can be affected by tropical storms and hurricanes moving across the Caribbean Sea. The climate in San Pedro de Sula is influenced by its location in a low-lying area surrounded by mountains and relatively close to the Caribbean Sea.

Copán has a subtropical highland climate with generally pleasant temperatures. Although this area has a rainy season running from May to October, rainfall occurs throughout the year, albeit to a lesser extent than during the rainy season. The somewhat drier months are November to April.

The Bay Islands, which include the islands of Roatan and Utila, lie in the Caribbean Sea off the northern coast of Honduras. The climate here is tropical and strongly influenced by the ocean. It is warm here all year round. During the rainy season, from October to January, there can be heavy rainfall, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in November. The drier season runs from February to September. June to November is the hurricane season, during which weather conditions on the Bay Islands may be affected. The Bay Islands are a perfect destination for snorkelling and diving; the best time to visit is from February to July.

The best time to visit Honduras when travelling with children

If you’re travelling with your children, the best time to visit Honduras is during the summer holidays. Although this is the rainy season, you’ll find that the weather in Honduras is certainly fine for travelling. The rain is mainly limited to the afternoons and you’ll be impressed by the beautiful green countryside. If you’re travelling during the Christmas holidays, you’ll be visiting during the dry season (with the exception of the Bay Islands). This is also an excellent time to visit Honduras. If you’d like to take your children to the Bay Islands for some snorkelling or diving, the best time to visit Honduras is during the spring half-term or the May half-term.

Time difference between Honduras and the Netherlands/Belgium

During Dutch/Belgian summer time, it is 8 hours earlier in Honduras.
During Dutch/Belgian winter time, it is 7 hours earlier in Honduras.

How long is the flight to Honduras?

There are no direct flights from Amsterdam to San Pedro de Sula. You will always have to change flights in Panama, Mexico or the United States. The minimum journey time from Amsterdam to San Pedro de Sula is 20 hours and 45 minutes, including transfer time. This time may be longer depending on the flight route and transfer time.
