Places of interest
Although Bacalar isn’t very big, there are several sights well worth seeing:
Laguna de los Siete Colores
Hire a local motorboat and explore the Laguna de los Siete Colores (Lake of the Seven Colours). What makes the lake so special is that the blue colour of the water changes depending on the depth. This creates a stunning and unique visual spectacle. The colours also change depending on the time of day, due to the position of the sun.
As well as exploring the lagoon by motorboat, we also recommend exploring it in other ways: go kayaking, try stand-up paddleboarding, enjoy a lovely swim or go sailing! However you choose to explore the lake, don’t miss the Pirate Channel, the Black Cenote and Bird Island!
Public beaches
Pay a visit to one of Bacalar’s public beaches. The ‘Balneario Municipal de Bacalar’ is a public beach situated in the centre of Bacalar, managed by the local council, and is a popular spot with both tourists and locals. Here, for a small fee, you can enjoy the clear waters of the lagoon and make use of facilities including toilets, showers and picnic tables. Another public beach is ‘Aserradero’, situated on the edge of the lagoon. It has a beautiful jetty and the water there is lovely! Here too, you can use the basic facilities for a small fee. In addition, for a fee, you can go kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the lake.
The stromatolites at Cocalitos
Cocalitos is situated right on the lagoon, just outside the centre of Bacalar, and is best known for its ‘stromatolites’, also known as living stones. These are freshwater corals made up of micro-organisms that form layered structures. They are one of the oldest life forms on Earth and form a unique landscape.
Los Rapidos
Los Rapidos, situated about 13 km from Bacalar, is best known for its fast-flowing, crystal-clear waters. We highly recommend going for a swim or trying your hand at canoeing or kayaking here. Another option is to go snorkelling here; thanks to the crystal-clear water, visibility is fantastic, making it an ideal spot to admire the colourful flora and fauna. As well as various species of fish, you may also come across stromatolites here.
Cenote Azul
The ‘Cenote Azul’ is a natural pool formed by limestone collapses. Dive from the cliffs surrounding the cenote into lovely, crystal-clear water! It’s a wonderful spot for swimming, snorkelling or even diving. The cenote is about 10 to 15 minutes from the centre of Bacalar and is easy to reach.
Bird Island (Isla de los Pájaros)
Bird Island is situated in the Lake of Seven Colours and is renowned for its abundance of birds and other flora and fauna. The island is a haven for pelicans, herons and other waterbirds, amongst others. You can visit Bird Island on a boat trip or paddle past the island in a canoe, kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard. It is important to respect the flora and fauna at all times and to maintain the tranquillity of the area.
Fort San Felipe de Bacalar
For those interested in a bit of history, a visit to Bacalar Fort, also known as ‘Fuerte de San Felipe’, is highly recommended. This historic fortress was built in 1729 to protect the town from pirate raids, which posed a threat to the region. It has an irregular star-shaped structure and also served as a military post. Today, it houses a military museum. The fort is situated in a stunning location on the shores of the Lake of Seven Colours. From the fort, you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of the lake. Admire the ancient defences and learn more about Bacalar’s (maritime) history whilst taking in the view!
Highly recommended
Try to experience a spectacular sunset over the lake at least once. You can do this from the lake’s shores, from a jetty or a restaurant or bar overlooking the lake, or from a kayak, canoe or boat. The lake is renowned for the beautiful reflections of the sky and the surrounding countryside at sunset; this, combined with the peaceful and serene surroundings, makes for a truly memorable sunset.
