Colonial Mexico

This city, surrounded by volcanoes and snow-capped mountain peaks, boasts no fewer than 70 (!) churches in its historic centre. Puebla was founded by the Spanish, and to this day there are still many Spanish influences to be seen, such as the colonial architecture and the painted ceramics.

The town was founded in the 16th century by the monk San Miguel, after whom the first part of its name is derived. Later, the name of the freedom fighter Allende was added. If you’re visiting Puebla, it’s definitely worth stopping off in Cholula as well. Both the town and the monastery rise up beside the Popocatepetl volcano, creating a truly impressive sight.

San Cristóbal de las Casas is also a place that is definitely worth a visit. This authentic town is full of brightly coloured colonial houses and cobbled streets. A lovely place, where life moves at a slower pace.

With its beautiful colonial centre, Oaxaca is both a cosmopolitan and a laid-back city. The city is renowned for its excellent cuisine, so it will come as no surprise that there is a wide range of superb restaurants to be found here. After all, Oaxaca is also famous for the high-quality handicrafts produced by the local people. There are countless markets to visit, where you can find hand-woven textiles, ceramics, wood carvings and pewterware.
