Yasuni National Park covers an area of 9,820 km² and lies between two rivers. It is often claimed that this park is the most biodiverse place in the world. To give just a few figures, the park is home to at least 150 species of amphibians, 121 species of reptiles, 382 known species of fish, 596 species of birds, 117 species of bats, 100,000 species of insects, more than 4,000 species of vascular plants and an enormous diversity of trees and shrubs.

The Amazon basin in Ecuador is the perfect place to learn more about the cultures that thrive in this vast jungle. There are a number of excellent initiatives run by local communities operating lodges in the Amazon region. A portion of the revenue goes towards protecting this unique ecosystem, whilst offering guests the opportunity to get to know the Amazon and its inhabitants in a meaningful way. It is regarded as one of the most extraordinary experiences in the Amazon. Early in the morning, hundreds of parrots gather to feed on the minerals hidden within the clay walls. The sound of the birds fluttering and their brightly coloured feathers make this a truly spectacular sight. You can admire one such clay wall by the Napo River.

Just imagine crossing the rainforest via a bridge high up amongst the treetops, some 36 metres above the ground. Here, you’ll have the chance to experience the rainforest from a completely different perspective. Scan the canopy for monkeys, birds and other animals. If you can’t see them, you’re sure to hear the howler monkey howling at sunset. You’ll find this treetop bridge at the Sacha Lodge.

In the Amazon, you’ll find what are known as blackwater rivers. What makes these waters special is that, due to their unique water conditions, they are home to different flora and fauna to the better-known whitewater rivers. The Sascha Lodge, situated on the blackwater lake Pilchicocha, has created a swimming pool in the lake where you are protected from the unknown by a mesh cage. Whilst swimming, safely on the other side of the net, you might even spot caimans and giant otters swimming by.
