El Valle del Elqui

The surprising Elqui Valley

Nestled between the peaks of the Andes and the coast near La Serena lies the Valle del Elqui. Known for its picturesque villages, vast landscapes and clear starry skies, the Valle del Elqui is a relatively undiscovered destination with plenty to offer. As well as charming villages such as Vicuña and Pisco Elqui, this region is also renowned for its wine-growing and, above all, for the production of Chile’s most famous drink, Pisco. This region is also renowned as one of the world’s best destinations for stargazing. This is due to the clear atmosphere and minimal light pollution. It is a paradise for astronomy enthusiasts.
The Elqui Valley is a wonderful destination for everyone, whether you’re looking for an active holiday, a culinary trip with visits to wine and Pisco distilleries, or simply want to soak up the culture.

Discover the Elqui Valley

History of the Elqui Valley

The history of the Elqui Valley dates back to pre-Spanish times. At that time, the area was inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Diaguita culture. During the Spanish colonisation, Spanish missionaries settled in the Elqui Valley and began converting the indigenous population. During the colonial period, the valley developed into an important agricultural region, particularly for the cultivation of grapes for the production of pisco and wine. Partly due to the work of the famous Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, the Valle del Elqui began to gain recognition as a spiritual centre in the 20th century.

Gabriela Mistral

Gabriela Mistral was a famous Chilean poet and also the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Mistral was born on 7 April 1889 near the village of Vicuña. Her legacy has had a lasting influence on the cultural identity of the Valle del Elqui region. Gabriela Mistral’s work was imbued with emotion, social justice and humanity, exploring themes such as love, motherhood, grief and the struggles faced by women. She was particularly admired for her insights into human suffering. She also played a significant role in reforming the education system. Alongside her literary achievements and diplomatic work, she campaigned for social justice, particularly for women and children. Today, you can visit a number of sites linked to Mistral’s life. A must-see is the Museo de Sitio Casa y Escuela de Gabriela Mistral

Pisco

Pisco is a traditional spirit produced mainly in Peru and Chile. Although Peru and Chile disagree on where Pisco originally comes from, there are specific regions where Pisco production is one of the main attractions. This is also the case in the Elqui Valley, where it forms an important part of the culture and economy. Pisco is a symbol of pride and tradition for many of the local residents. For example, Pisco always features in all local festivals and celebrations. Pisco is made by distilling fermented grape juice, often from grape varieties grown in the region. In the Elqui Valley, these are mainly Muscat grapes. The Piscos produced in the Elqui Valley are renowned for their high quality, characterised by rich aromas and flavours. Pisco can be enjoyed in various ways: neat, as an ingredient in various dishes, or as part of cocktails, such as the Pisco Sour.
In the Elqui Valley, you’ll find several Pisco distilleries where you can take guided tours and take part in tastings. You’ll learn more about the history of Pisco and the production process, and of course you’ll be able to sample different types of Pisco. Distilleries that we definitely think are worth a visit include Capel, Mistral and the two artisanal distilleries, Los Nichos and Doña Josefa.

Hikes in the Elqui Valley

There are plenty of opportunities for walking in the region. These range from easy, short walks to longer, more challenging routes. It is important to always check with local guides beforehand and keep an eye on the weather conditions. During your trek, it is important to take plenty of water and a navigation system with you, and to wear protective clothing.
Some popular treks:

Stargazing spots and observatories

The Elqui Valley enjoys clear starry skies all year round, thanks to its dry atmosphere. Light pollution is also minimal, due to its geographical location far from urban areas. These two factors make the Elqui Valley one of the best places in the world for stargazing.
There are several observatories scattered throughout the Elqui Valley. There are even some accommodation providers that have their own observatories. During a visit to one of these observatories, you’ll learn more about astronomy, planets, the universe and constellations, and you’ll be able to use telescopes to peer deeper into the cosmos. The Elqui Valley also organises astronomy festivals where visitors have the opportunity to take part in workshops, talks and observation sessions.
