A melting pot of cultures
People were already living in Suriname before Columbus arrived. Subsequently, the English, the Dutch and the Portuguese found their way there. African slaves were brought over to work on the plantations. Later, labourers from the former British and Dutch East Indies, as well as Chinese people, came to build a life here. An enormous diversity of cultures, which is unique to South America. Suriname is fascinating, surprising and colourful.

A symbol of the diverse cultures
In Paramaribo, in front of the President’s office, stands the statue of ‘Mama Sranan’, the symbolic mother of Suriname with her five children. The five children represent the five largest ethnic groups that populate the country and give it its colour.

Staying overnight on a plantation
The Commewijne district borders Paramaribo and is the region where, back when Suriname was a Dutch colony, the most important plantations were located. A number of these plantations have been restored to their former glory and can be visited on a day trip, whilst at some you can also stay overnight, such as at Fredriksdorp.

Guided trip by Mr Soekardi
Another plantation worth visiting is the famous Mariënburg sugar plantation. During Johan’s visit, he was given a guided trip by Mr Soekardi, who worked there until 1984. This trip provided an interesting glimpse into times long past.

A little piece of Africa on the Upper Suriname River
A visit to the Upper Suriname River is a ‘must’ if you want to discover Maroon culture. The Maroons are descendants of Creole slaves who, during the era of slavery, managed to escape from the plantations and took refuge in Suriname’s dense rainforest. In the villages, you will still find many traditions and customs that have their origins in West Africa.

Staying at Danpaati Lodge
Danpaati River Lodge is a small-scale and charming lodge, situated on a small island in the Upper Suriname River. What makes Danpaati River Lodge unique is that it is run entirely by members of the Maroon community. It is a wonderful place, with all proceeds going directly to the local community.
