Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and has the highest standard of living in Latin America. The city’s atmosphere is similar to Buenos Aires, but is a bit quieter and smaller. Because of the clear street plans, it is quite a challenge to get lost here as a traveller.

Go out by yourself or with a guide and stroll through the old town centre. The centre is an interesting mix of classic and modern, creating an interesting picture. This gives the city a unique identity.

Montevideo is situated on the waterfront and along the coast, there is a kilometre-long boulevard on which you can walk or cycle. Tip: also take a good look at the colours of the water. At Montevideo the Rio de La Plata flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The water is sometimes brown/green because of the river and sometimes blue because of the sea.

The Uruguayans have lunch in the 'Mercado del Puerto'. This is a large covered hall where you can buy groceries as well as lunch. At noon, the market floods with office workers who enjoy a large steak with a good glass of wine during their lunch break. Very nice to experience this for yourself, but be on time: otherwise there is no seat left.

From Buenos Aires, a ferry will take you to the town of Colonia del Sacremento in Uruguay in just one hour. The country could not wish for a nicer gateway to the often forgotten Uruguay. Colonia del Sacremento is a beautiful small town that has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995.

While strolling through the narrow streets with irregularly cobblestones, you will come to the conclusion that you have ended up in the past. Colonia del Sacremento, in short Colonia, is a melting pot of typical Portuguese and Spanish low buildings from the seventeenth century. Have a drink on one of the cosy terraces and climb the city's lighthouse for a nice view.

A day in Colonia is not complete without making a walk to the pier to enjoy the beautiful sunset.
