During the pandemic, when everything was in lockdown, we were allowed to go on a trip! Destination: Uruguay.
Most of the people we told that we were going to Uruguay reacted by asking: ‘Where? Where on earth is that?’
We’d chosen this destination because Uruguay had been on our list for ages. We’d actually wanted to combine a visit to the country with a trip to another country, but because of all the restrictions, we decided to spend the whole trip in Uruguay. What a brilliant decision that was! We spent three weeks thoroughly enjoying all the wonderful things Uruguay had to offer: and there was plenty!!
Petra from Sapa Pana Travel put together a wonderful itinerary for us. They really listened to what we wanted, and we certainly noticed that throughout the trip. Every place we stayed and every adventure we embarked on with one of the guides: it suited us down to the ground. We got to know the soul of the country and were guided through it with real care by our trip leaders.
From a stunning hotel (Sacromonte) with fantastic and welcoming staff to a cheese tasting at La Vigna, which was organised down to the last detail. To an incredibly delicious assado over Christmas at Estancia Vik and a lovely stay at El Bacon del Abra, where we felt right at home and enjoyed the company of the owners, Diego and Ursula (plus their pet pig, Escobar): it was all absolutely wonderful!
For us, it was an unforgettable trip where we didn’t really feel like tourists but rather part of the country. It’s actually impossible to explain how it felt to be there. For us, at any rate, it was a huge gift to be able to enjoy this country – where the people really understand how to live life – whilst the Netherlands was in lockdown! We’ll definitely be going back, because Uruguay has stolen our hearts: Thank you, Sapa Pana Travel, for organising this wonderful trip!!
