A family trip full of memories in Suriname

The Venghaus & Klarer families

In April, our whole family – us as grandparents, our two daughters, son-in-law and two grandchildren (aged 9 and 5) – visited Suriname, my husband’s homeland. We’d been there several times over the years, but this time was particularly special: now our grandchildren could also get to know the country their grandfather comes from – in fact, their roots.

Roots in Suriname

Together with Sapa Pana Travel, we put together a wonderful, varied trip, with something special for everyone. In Paramaribo, we had a lovely guide, a kind lady who shared all sorts of interesting details that were new to us. The Commewijne trip, during which we even spotted dolphins, took us to places including Plantage Rust en Werk, the birthplace of our grandchildren’s great-grandfather. A truly special experience.

Adventure and history

At Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, in the former prison – now a museum – we were given a detailed insight into Suriname’s various ethnic groups. We then enjoyed our stay in Frederiksdorp, formerly a plantation and now a beautiful resort. We stayed in lovely lodges, went cycling, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding, enjoyed excellent food and spotted caimans. And to top it all off, we came face to face with a four-metre-long anaconda, right near our cottage!

At Plantage Peperpot, we stayed in a spacious apartment. We also visited the Jodensavanne, where a friendly guide gave us clear and fascinating explanations. Our stay in Anaula, deep in the jungle, including a visit to a Maroon village, was an experience in a word. Such tranquillity, such natural beauty!

Throughout the entire trip, we never felt unsafe for a moment, partly thanks to the detailed itinerary and the tips and tools we received in advance. It was a shame, though, that the rainy season had started unusually early, but fortunately we didn’t have to miss out on anything because of it. Suriname: what a country! What natural beauty! What delicious food! And above all, what lovely people!

We cherish our memories of Sweetie Sranang.
