At the end of January, we flew to Rio de Janeiro. We stayed in a beautiful hotel in the Santa Teresa district, which offers a stunning view of the city. On our first day, accompanied by an enthusiastic guide, we visited the famous statue of Cristo Redentor, Sugarloaf Mountain and the Selaron Steps. The next day, we hopped on our hire bikes and cycled around the lake in the heart of the city, past the botanical gardens, before finally ending up on the beaches of Leblon and Ipanema. When you think of Rio, you think of samba, so a visit to the Lapa district was a must. Our guide took us to a number of trendy clubs where the locals go in the evenings.

After Rio de Janeiro, we took a domestic flight to Iguazu. Once again, we stayed in a lovely hotel right in the park itself, which meant we could be among the first to arrive at the waterfalls early in the morning. The sound of the water in particular is a special experience here, perhaps even more so than the view itself.
