Colourful Colombia

| | |

I spent three and a half weeks travelling through Colombia in August and September. Sapa Pana Travel organised this private trip for me, and I haven’t regretted it for a moment. I’d prepared thoroughly and read up on the country beforehand. Even so, I was regularly and pleasantly surprised by everything there was to see.

Surprised by the hospitality

A while ago, Colombia didn’t have the best reputation. I haven’t noticed much of that now. The country is accessible and, in my view, just as safe – or unsafe – as any other country. The people are friendly, even though they usually only speak Spanish. That language barrier was sometimes a bit of a problem. Thanks to the specially created WhatsApp group, I could always get in touch with the local travel agent or with Sapa Pana Travel in the Netherlands. Kudos for their quick responses and their ability to improvise when unexpected events arose. That meant I could travel without a care in the world.

Diversity in the landscape

In terms of scenery and landscape diversity, Colombia is highly recommended if you’re prepared to travel a lot, as it’s a vast country. I’ve seen some truly beautiful places; extraordinary landscapes such as La Macarena with the colourful Caño Cristales River, the Tatacoa Desert and the Chicamocha Gorge. The often unique accommodation, local guides and drivers were excellent every time.

The perfect mix

For me, the trip was perfect in terms of its structure and variety. It got off to a good start with a focus on nature, briefly interspersed with the hustle and bustle of Bogotá. After the city of Cali came a unique desert experience. And then we ventured further and further into the mountains, passing through colourful towns with a rich history. The trip ended in the historic cities of Medellín and Cartagena. There was plenty of Catholic art, but also modern art and, of course, street art. Colour everywhere, time and time again!
