Cruise to the Falkland Islands and South Georgia

Days 5 and 6 | At sea

During these days, you’ll be at sea heading for South Georgia. You’ll have the chance to attend fascinating talks and presentations given by our expert guides on board. Together, you’ll keep an eye out for wildlife, which you can spot from the communal areas or your own cabin. Seabirds, such as albatrosses and petrels, will fly past, and you may even spot various species of whale.

Day 7 | Elsehul Bay

You are scheduled to arrive at Elsehul Bay this afternoon. The plan is for you to go ashore here by zodiac, although this is subject to approval by the government of South Georgia.

Day 8 | Grytviken, Fortuna Bay

Today you will go ashore at Grytviken on South Georgia. Grytviken is a harbour town and former whaling station, and it is the only settlement on the island. Here you will visit the historic site, which includes a museum and the grave of Ernest Shackleton, the explorer who led the legendary polar expedition. He set sail for Antarctica in August 1914 aboard the Endurance, aiming to be the first to cross the South Pole on foot. Just short of their destination, they became trapped in pack ice: the start of a twenty-month ordeal. Later, in 1921, whilst on an expedition to sail around the entire Antarctic continent, he died on South Georgia, where he was subsequently buried.

In the afternoon, you’ll visit Fortuna Bay to see king penguins. Here, you’ll learn more about Shackleton and his expedition. If you wish, you can also take part in the ‘Shackleton Walk’.

Day 9 | Gold Harbour, Cooper Bay

In the morning, you’ll make a landing at Gold Harbour, a spectacular location where you’ll see king penguins, elephant seals and hanging glaciers. In the afternoon, you’ll visit Cooper Bay. Aboard a Zodiac, you’ll set out in search of macaroni penguins.

Day 10 | St Andrews Bay, Ocean Harbour

At St Andrews Bay, you’ll set out to explore a large king penguin colony and spot elephant seals. A visit to Ocean Harbour is planned for the afternoon. You’ll go ashore in a Zodiac to visit a shipwreck and the remains of the whaling industry that once operated here.

Day 11 | Prion Island, Salisbury Plain

A day packed with wildlife. In the morning, you’ll visit Prion Island, where you can see nesting albatrosses. In the afternoon, you’ll head to Salisbury Plain for more king penguins and breathtaking scenery.

Days 12 to 14 | at sea

Over the next few days, you’ll sail back to the Falkland Islands. During this time, you can also attend a variety of fascinating talks and presentations on board.

Day 15 | Bleaker Island

In the evening, you’ll arrive at Bleaker Island, a nature reserve renowned for its rich birdlife, home to a wide variety of birds.

Day 16 | At sea

Today you will sail back towards Punta Arenas. You are welcome to make use of the facilities on board the ship.

Day 17 | Punta Arenas

Today you will arrive back in Punta Arenas, where you will say goodbye to the expedition team and disembark. Your unique cruise has come to an end, but you can continue your journey from here. We would be happy to advise you on the options available.
