This is an example of a 15-day cruise visiting the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. This expedition cruise can be booked in combination with a travel programme in Patagonia for example. Below you will find the description of a 15-day cruise aboard the Magellan Explorer that departs on Saturday 16th of October 2021.

Day 1: Stanley harbour

Your journey starts at Stanley harbour on the Falkland Islands. Visit the town and board the Magellan Explorer for an unforgettable adventure.

Day 2: Falkland Islands: Saunders Island and Caracass Island

In the morning you will wake up aboard the ship and visit one of the Falkland Islands belonging to the western main island. You will visit Saunders island with its long white sand. Let yourself be overwhelmed by the sight of the rockhopper penguins, eyebrow albatrosses and the gentoo penguin. In the afternoon you will visit Caracass Island. Here you will have the opportunity to visit the small settlement Port Patterson, famous for its gardens that give you a tropical feeling. You can spot several birds and enjoy a typical Falkland tea experience.

Day 3: Falkland Islands: New Island and Weddel Island

Located in the south of West Falkland you will find places like New Island, Weddell Island. Dramatic cliffs contrast with sheltered sandy coves and naturally created harbours. These places are home to a large concentration of wildlife. Some of the most extraordinary nature experiences can be found just a stone's throw away from the settlements on the island.

Day 4: Falkland Islands: Bleaker Island

In the morning you go ashore at Bleaker Island. This is a nature reserve with an important bird area that is home to a wide variety of bird species. In the afternoon you will board the Magellan Explorer again and head for South Georgia.

Day 5 and 6: At sea

These days you are at sea in the direction of South Georgia. During these days you can follow fascinating lectures and presentations given by our expert guides on board. Together you can look forward to the wildlife you can see from the common areas or your own cabin. Seabirds, such as albatrosses and petrels, will fly by and you may even see different species of whales.

Day 7: Elsehul Bay

You are scheduled to arrive at Elsehul Bay in the afternoon today. It is planned that you will land here with a zodiac, but this is subject to the approval of the Government of South Georgia.

Day 8: Grytviken, Fortuna Bay

Today you will land at Grytviken on South Georgia. Grytviken is a harbour town and former whaling station and it is the only place on the island. Here you will visit the historic site with its museum and the tomb of Ernest Shackleton, the explorer who led the legendary polar expedition. He took the Endurance to Antarctica in August 1914 to be the first to cross the South Pole on foot. Near their destination, they got stuck in the pack ice: the beginning of a twenty-month ordeal. Later in 1921, while on an expedition to sail around the entire Antarctic continent, he died on South Georgia where he was subsequently buried.

In the afternoon you will visit Fortuna Bay to see king penguins. Here you will learn more about Shackleton and his expedition. If desired, you can also take part in the walk called 'Shackleton walk'.

Day 9: Gold Harbour, Cooper Bay

In the morning you will make a landing at Gold Harbour, a spectacular location where you will see king penguins, elephant seals and hanging glaciers. In the afternoon you will visit Cooper Bay. Aboard a zodiac you will go in search of macaroni penguins.

Day 10: St. Andrews Bay, Ocean Harbour

On St. Andrews bay you will go in search of a large king penguin colony and elephant seals. In the afternoon a visit to Ocean Harbour is planned. With a zodiac you will go ashore and visit a shipwreck and remains of the whaling industry that has taken place here in history.

Day 11: Prion Island, Salisbury Plain

A day full of animal life. In the morning you will visit Prion Island where you can see nesting albatrosses. In the afternoon you will go to Salisbury Plain for more king penguins and breathtaking landscapes.

Day 12 to 14: at sea

These days you sail back to the Falkland Islands. Also these days you can follow several fascinating lectures and presentations on board.

Day 15: Stanley harbour

Today you will arrive back at Stanley Harbour on the Falkland Islands. Your unique cruise is over, but you can continue your journey from here. We will gladly advise you about the possibilities.
