Day 11 and 12 | Buenos Aires
These days are freely planned. Visit the highlights of the different districts such as the beautiful parks in the Palermo district, the stylish Recoleta district, which offers great shopping and is also home to Evita Peron's tomb. The cemetery has been a kind of small representation of Buenos Aires and its various architectural styles since its inauguration in 1882. The characteristic district of San Telmo, the birthplace of the tango and, of course, the working-class neighbourhood of La Boca with its colourful houses are also worth a visit! From the hill of Plaza San Martín you can enjoy the view over the Retiro district. Avenida 9 de Julio has been the widest street in the world since 1936 - the pavements are almost 140 metres apart. Countless old buildings were demolished in the 1930s to build this avenida - except for the stately French embassy that remains at the corner of 9 de Julio and Alvear street. The Plaza de Mayo bears its name in honour of the founders of the Argentine Republic who declared the country's independence here in May 1810. Here in this square with palms, gardens, a central statue and historic colonial-era buildings all around, you will feel like you are in another time. All major demonstrations take place here, for example that of the Foolish Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo who protested against the atrocities of military rule in the 1970s. The Casa Rosada, located in the Plaza de Mayo, is guarded by a guard of honour - at seven o'clock in the evening, these soldiers collect the national blue and white flag. The Teatro Colón, with its European architecture, is one of the city's most famous beacons and the symbol of its cultural life. The world-renowned institution has good acoustic properties. The main auditorium, six floors high, offers seating for more than 3,500 visitors. Enjoy this beautiful city!
