Day 3 | Buenos Aires

Today you’ll be taken on a culinary trip of Buenos Aires and introduced to various types of street food. Don’t eat too much for breakfast, as you’re guaranteed to have plenty to sample during this trip. Most Argentinians eat virtually nothing in the morning, preferring to have a hearty lunch instead. Together with your guide, you’ll discover the Argentinians’ three favourite dishes, such as the delicious empanadas – pastries filled with ingredients such as cheese, chicken or vegetables. You’ll also get to try a choripán, a sandwich with spicy sausage and chimichurri. Almost every vendor has their own ‘secret’ recipe for the choripán. You’ll round off the trip with a delicious ice cream, choosing from around 200 different flavours! During the trip, the guide will also tell you more about Buenos Aires itself. At the end, you’ll be taken back to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish.

Day 4 | Buenos Aires – Salta

You will be collected from your hotel today and taken to Buenos Aires airport. Here, you will board your domestic flight to Salta. Once you arrive, a rental car will be waiting for you to drive you to your accommodation (approx. 10 km | 20-minute drive). You’ll be staying in a charming ‘finca’ just outside Salta, situated on the vine-covered foothills of the Andes. Here you can go for walks, enjoy excellent horse riding and, in complete tranquillity, savour a traditional ‘parilla’ (grilled meat) with a good glass of wine. Finca Valentina is a small-scale accommodation with just 5 rooms. The beautiful garden features an unheated swimming pool. From here, you can enjoy the majestic views of the mountains. Cookery classes are regularly held in the finca’s cosy kitchen. Breakfast and dinner are served at the large wooden tables in the finca’s living room. Be sure to try the ‘dangerously delicious’ biscuits at breakfast.

Day 5 | Salta

Enjoy your day off! Today you’ll have time to explore Salta and its surroundings. The region boasts stunning canyon landscapes with multicoloured mountains, as well as high plateaus (punas) with cacti several metres tall. Salta has a beautiful historic centre with an attractive main square, the Plaza de Armas, which is also home to a number of good restaurants. You can visit Salta’s main attractions, such as the cathedral, the Church of San Francisco and Mount San Bernardo, from where you’ll have a fantastic view of the city.

Day 6 | Salta – Purmamarca

(approx. 210 km | 4-hour drive)
In the morning, you will collect your rental car from your accommodation. You will then drive towards the city of Jujuy, the northernmost city, not far from the Bolivian border. This town is also the heart of the country’s most indigenous region, where the majority of the population is of Indigenous descent. Here you’ll experience the genuine, authentic Andean atmosphere characteristic of Peru, Bolivia and northern Chile. The end of this journey takes you to the Humahuaca Valley, a gorge that runs southwards from the border with Bolivia. Tens of thousands of years ago, the Rio Grande carved out this impressive landscape. The traditional village of Purmamarca is also situated in this valley.

Day 7 | Purmamarca

This day is free, so you can explore the surrounding area at your leisure. Purmamarca lies at an altitude of 2,200 metres at the foot of the ‘Cerro de Siete Colores’, the impressive mountain that truly does have seven colours. The colours in the rocks are caused by the oxidation of various minerals in the soil: manganese produces a purple colour, copper produces green, clay produces a yellow colour, and depending on the iron content, there are various shades of red. You can also visit the main square, where a wide range of goods are on sale – including ponchos, rugs and souvenirs – or the little church, Iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima.

Day 8 | Purmamarca – San Antonio de los Cobres

(approx. 155 km | 3-hour drive)
You’ll continue your journey to San Antonio de los Cobres. This is an indigenous mountain village where the pre-Columbian culture has been well preserved. You’ll follow Ruta 51, part of which is still unpaved. On the way, you’ll pass the Salinas Grandes, a vast salt lake. You’ll then continue to your hotel, which is situated in the village of San Antonio de los Cobres. This village is situated at an altitude of approximately 3,800 metres.

Day 9 | San Antonio de los Cobres – Cachi

(approx. 147 km | 3.5-hour drive)
Today you’ll drive on from San Antonio de los Cobres to Cachi. You’ll continue your journey towards Cachi via Ruta 40. On the way to Cachi, you’ll pass through Abra del Acay, also known as the highest point on Ruta 40. Check the road conditions for this route in advance, as it can be difficult to navigate; if so, it’s better to travel via Salta. Cachi is known for its beautiful colonial charm, good roads and stately buildings that tell the story of a relatively prosperous past in trade and administration. You can also discover this history at the Pío Pablo Díaz Archaeological Museum. In addition to this museum, the town boasts several other interesting sights

Day 10 | Cachi – Cafayate

(approx. 170 km | 5-hour drive)
Today you’ll drive through the mountains to Cafayate. The arid landscape and the abundance of sunshine here make this area ideal for wine-growing. At the end of your journey, you’ll arrive in Cafayate with its vast, lush vineyards.

Day 11 | Cafayate

Today you have a day off in Cafayate. Cafayate is a small, charming town surrounded by beautiful mountains, vineyards and bodegas. It has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. You can visit the central square, Plaza San Martín. Here you’ll find charming shops, outdoor cafés and restaurants. Everything is within walking distance, including a number of bodegas where you can enjoy a free guided trip and wine tasting. You can also visit the Quebrada de las Flechas, a desert of quartz ash and rocks covered in mud from an ancient lake – the result of 500 million years of geological evolution.

Day 12 | Cafayate – Puerto Iguazu

(approx. 190 km | 4-hour drive)
In the morning, you’ll drive to Salta Airport. The road to Salta is one of the most scenic routes, offering stunning views, in north-western Argentina. On your return journey to Salta, you’ll drive through the Quebrada de las Conchas gorge, which consists of 55 kilometres of picturesque rock formations, dating from forty to one hundred million years ago. Geological formations such as the Yacoraite and the Pirguas are of great significance here. On arrival at the airport, you will return your rental car and board your domestic flight to Puerto Iguazu. On arrival, you will be welcomed by a member of staff and taken to your hotel.

Day 13 | Puerto Iguazu

After breakfast, you’ll visit the Argentine side of the falls. When you look straight down into the ‘Garganta del Diablo’ (Devil’s Throat) from above, you’ll immediately understand how this section got its name. Here, nature reveals its true nature. It really is a unique experience to stand so close to this waterfall. You’ll end up getting soaked, mind you, but nature will see to it that the sun dries you off again!

Day 14 | Puerto Iguazú

You will be collected from your hotel today and, together with your guide, you will visit the Brazilian side of the falls. The word ‘Iguaçu’ means ‘big water’ in the indigenous Tupi-Guarani language. Foz do Iguaçu comprises around 275 waterfalls, and these are best visited in the morning when the light on the water is at its most beautiful. As the sun rises, rainbows appear on all sides. There is a path leading all the way down to the base of the thundering cascade, with several beautiful viewing points along the way. Afterwards, you will be taken back to your hotel.

Day 15 | Puerto Iguazú – Esteros del Iberá

After breakfast, you will be collected from your hotel and taken to your next destination by private transfer. For the next few nights, you will be staying at the Puerto Valle Lodge, a small-scale lodge beautifully situated amidst an impressive landscape featuring lagoons, marshes, forests and the Paraná River. Estancia Puerto Valle was founded in 1868, when the Italian sailor Bernadino Valle bought the estate to set up his livestock and transport business here. Today, his descendants are involved in sustainable production, forestry and livestock farming, and they support the Yacaré Porá caiman rehabilitation project.

Days 16 & 17 | Esteros del Iberá

During these days, you can take advantage of the excursions offered by your accommodation to explore the area. The Esteros del Iberá region is, after the Pantanal in Brazil, the second-largest wetland in the world, covering a total area of 15,000 to 20,000 km². For a long time, this region was very difficult to access. It is only in the last few years that this region has been ‘discovered’ to a greater extent.

Day 18 | Esteros del Iberá – Buenos Aires

Your stay in the Esteros del Iberá nature reserve is coming to an end. You will be taken to Posadas Airport, from where you will take a domestic flight to Buenos Aires. Once you arrive, one of our local staff members will take you to your hotel.

Day 19 | Buenos Aires

Today’s programme features a graffiti and street art trip. Accompanied by an expert English-speaking guide, you’ll explore some of Buenos Aires’s best-known and lesser-known streets. First, you’ll visit the MALBA museum, which houses 270 works by modern and contemporary Latin American artists, including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Fernando Botero. Afterwards, you’ll be taken through the streets of Palermo, where you’ll see stunning graffiti artworks. Many of these works incorporate political or social themes.

Day 20 | Buenos Aires – Amsterdam

You will be collected from your hotel today and taken to the international airport for your return flight to the Netherlands.
