Island hopping

The archipelago consists of 200 large and smaller islands and owes its name to the pearl trade that was once conducted there by pirates such as Henry Morgan and Balboa. Pearls are still sold here, but the main attractions are the turquoise waters, the lush vegetation, the many tropical birds, the underwater world and the snow-white beaches.

The island of Coiba, off the west coast of Panama, is home to one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific. The island lies on the migration route of whales, which can be seen here between June and October. Sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches between July and January.

Here you can enjoy exotic sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, the jungle, the Caribbean atmosphere and, above all, the colourful reefs! Here you can discover some of the best-preserved hard and soft corals in the world. You’ll also encounter many tropical fish in the stunning reefs, including stingrays, lobsters, sea urchins and starfish.

‘A different island for every day’, as the indigenous people, the Kuna Indians, say of the San Blas Islands. Of all the islands, only 40 are inhabited by the Kuna, who have their own language, customs, music, dance, culture and economic system. Until recently, people here used to pay with coconuts.
