Much has already been written about Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Situated at high altitude, amidst the majestic Andes and surrounded by awe-inspiring volcanoes, this city is renowned for its rich history, stunning architecture, incredibly hospitable people, delicious cuisine and vibrant culture. During my trip to this country, I sought out this fascinating blend, ultimately shaped by the fusion of indigenous and colonial influences. Well, I certainly did find this blend. Indeed, Quito offers an unforgettable experience for travellers seeking adventure and discovery.
A blend of Europeans and indigenous peoples
The history of Quito dates back thousands of years, to when the area was inhabited by the Quitu tribe. A tribe known to have carried “trophies” about with them. They believed that the shrunken heads of their enemies, tied around their necks, served as a source of spiritual power in the 16th century. Today, almost 85 per cent of the population consists of mestizos, a mix of Europeans and the indigenous peoples of Latin America.
UNESCO World Heritage List
A stroll through the historic centre of Quito, the first city in the world to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, is like a journey back in time. Narrow cobbled streets wind past colourful colonial buildings, majestic churches and charming squares. Among other sights, I visited Quito’s magnificent cathedrals, such as the impressive Basilica of the National Patron Saint (where you can climb high up into the towers and enjoy a breathtaking view) and the elegant San Francisco Church, which are adorned with astonishing works of art and Baroque-style architectural details. Galleries and museums scattered throughout the city showcase a diverse mix of contemporary and traditional art, including the Fundación Guayasamín, the Templo del Sol, and the Museo Nacional del Ecuador. Each and every one is well worth a visit.
Blessed with natural beauty
Despite its status as a metropolis with nearly 3 million inhabitants, spread across a strip of land 8 km wide and 50 km long, Quito is also blessed with incredible natural beauty. And this offers adventurers countless opportunities to explore the stunning surroundings, such as hiking, mountaineering and birdwatching.
Cotopaxi
I was in awe at the Reserva Geobotánica Pululahua, the crater of a dormant volcano, inhabited by people. What’s more, I reached the 5,000-metre mark above sea level when I climbed the Cotopaxi volcano with my guide in the national park of the same name, not too far from the capital. One of the highest volcanoes in the world, and what’s more, as is well known, the Earth bulges slightly at the equator. So, in principle, these mountains and volcanoes are closer to the sun than, for example, the Himalayas. Despite the cloud cover, it was a unique experience.

Naturally, during the day I also visited the ‘centre of the world’ and managed to balance an egg on a nail. Latitude 0°00’00” and the accompanying photo are, of course, a must when visiting this destination. The equator, ‘el ecuador’ in Spanish, is ultimately what gave this country its name. Quito offers a delightful journey through the country’s culinary traditions. I treated myself by trying a bit of everything everywhere, and also took part in a culinary trip – highly recommended, as you’re accompanied by the chef to select fresh produce at the market. I couldn’t resist an agave trip with tasting either – it’s perfect to combine with a local lunch. In short, Quito is a city that will capture your heart with its charming streets, vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes. Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, a nature enthusiast or a foodie. Quito has something for everyone and offers an unforgettable experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left.
