Spend the night under the stars in Huacachina
As a child, I often used to gaze at the stars on summer evenings, searching for the constellations I could spot. The idea of spending the night surrounded by nature had always appealed to me, but I’d never imagined that spending the night in the desert would be possible. That was until I visited the oasis of Huacachina in Peru.
“ What made my stay in Huacachina truly unique was the experience of spending the night amidst the impressive sand dunes ”
Huacachina
This oasis is surrounded by majestic sand dunes, and a spectacular way to explore them is by going on a buggy trip or trying your hand at sandboarding. However, what really made my stay in Huacachina unique was the experience of spending the night at a glamping site amidst these impressive sand dunes. Even the journey to our accommodation was an adventure in itself.
The journey to the glamping site
During my trip through Peru, spending the night at this special spot was one of the things on my itinerary that I was really looking forward to. To reach our accommodation for the night, we had to take a buggy ride through these sand dunes. We drove up the first sand dune and from that moment on, the adventure really began. Our driver had the accelerator firmly under control and together we raced through the sand. The adrenaline was coursing through me. We did nothing but laugh our heads off for the entire ride. After the buggy ride, it was time to go sandboarding. Here, you can descend the dunes on either a board or skis. Some experience is required for the descent on skis, but we opted for the boards, which we could use either sitting or lying down – a really fun experience!
A comfortable night’s stay in the desert
The sun began to set slowly and it was time to head to the glamping site. We got back into the buggy for our final ride of the evening. However, our driver made one last stop at the top of one of the sand dunes, from where we had a magnificent view of where we would be spending the night. We then descended the dune and, upon arrival, were greeted with a refreshing towel so we could freshen up a bit, as there are no showers here.
Although a stay in a glamping site might sound simple, that’s certainly not how I experienced it. The tents were spacious and cosily decorated with beautiful rugs, lighting and comfortable beds. Once the sun had set, we went to the communal area of the glamping site, where we could sit together, play games and enjoy the campfire. There’s something rather magical about it, right in the middle of the desert. Dinner was also very well organised. There were small grills on the tables, on which the staff had prepared fresh vegetables, potatoes and various types of meat. For dessert, we were given marshmallows to roast over the fire – a must, of course, on any camping adventure. This made for a cosy and convivial evening, whilst we marvelled at the beautiful starry sky and the tranquillity of the sand dunes all around us.

“ After taking a moment to enjoy the view, it was time to say goodbye to this unique spot ”
Waking up amongst the sand dunes
Waking up the next morning in the middle of the desert was an experience in itself. Once I’d rubbed the sleep from my eyes, I quickly realised where I was again. I quickly got dressed and went outside. The sun was shining again, so we climbed the sand dunes together. From here, we had a view of where we’d slept and the surrounding dunes. After enjoying the view for a little while longer, it was time to say goodbye to this unique spot. We set off again in the buggies and drove to the village of Huacachina. All in all, this was a unique adventure I’ll never forget!
