River cruise through the Peruvian Amazon
I was lucky enough to travel on the Aqua Nera recently. This is one of the most luxurious ships sailing this marvellous river, and it was a magical experience. The serenity of the Amazon, combined with the comfort and luxury of the ship, made for an unforgettable journey. Watching the sunrise over the river, listening to the sounds of the jungle whilst holding a delicious cup of coffee, is indescribable.

The ship itself is fantastic. Its design is inspired by the dark, mysterious waters of the Amazon and the region’s rich culture. On board, you’ll want for nothing; the culinary creations of the top chefs, crafted from local ingredients and traditional flavours, will delight you every day. The crew are incredibly attentive and ensure that every guest feels special. It is therefore no surprise that guests leave the ship with a touch of wistfulness, even if the cruise lasts only a few days. The only cure for this bittersweet feeling is to set off on another journey!
Three things I enjoyed during my river cruise on the Amazon:
- An evening walk through the lush rainforest, accompanied by a local guide and an indigenous resident who clears a path through this unspoilt wilderness with a machete. You’ll discover exotic wildlife in its ‘back garden’.
- The residents of the indigenous villages will teach you how to fish for piranhas, and afterwards you’ll paddle along the banks of this beautiful region in homemade canoes. Interaction with the local people is spontaneous and gives you a good insight into their daily lives.
- Sailing along the dark rivers in the dark, with only a powerful torch for company, on the lookout for caimans in the tall grass. It is a unique and exciting experience to witness the unspoilt nature and rich biodiversity of the ‘lungs of the world’ at close quarters.
Bonus: tracking down and spotting sloths and monkeys in the tall trees of the Amazon. These animals are definitely a highlight of the trip, and you’re almost certain to spot them thanks to the keen eyes of the excellent local guides on board this wonderful river cruise on the Amazon.
