In the footsteps of the Maya, a journey through Guatemala & Belize

Sapa Pana Travel and their local partner took us on a three-week adventure through Guatemala and Belize, with the Maya as the central theme. Flying from Brussels via Madrid, we spent the first week exploring Guatemala on a trip of the Highlands, specifically Antigua, the Pacaya volcano, Lake Atitlán (San Juan–Santiago), the Atitlán Nature Reserve, Panajachel, Chichicastenango and Iximché.

Deep into the jungle
With a domestic flight to Flores, we experienced the highlights of our trip that we’d been so looking forward to: Tikal – Yaxha – Topoxté – Nakum, some sites that were very busy with visitors and others, deep in the jungle, that were completely deserted.

We set aside the third week for Belize, visiting places such as Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and Caracol – the Maya at their best.

Guatemala City
Before heading home, we flew back from Belize to Guatemala City. During a city trip, we explored the capital, the highlight of which was the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, where the impressive art and history of the Maya come together.
