The best-known wetland area in South America is the Pantanal in Brazil. The abundant fresh water is teeming with more than 250 species of fish and a wide variety of aquatic plants. This makes it possible to go snorkelling in these teeming rivers. Another added bonus is that these teeming rivers attract a wealth of other wildlife. Bonito is renowned for its crystal-clear springs, where you can snorkel amongst a diverse array of fish species. The reflection of sunlight, branches, broken tree trunks and rock formations create a stunningly beautiful underwater landscape here.

The Pantanal is also an area where the jaguar is found. The jaguar is mainly active in the morning and evening and does not show itself very often. The Caiman Lodge works in partnership with the Onçafri Jaguar project with the aim of protecting the jaguar. As a guest, you’ll have the opportunity to spend a day with the Jaguar Habituation team and take part in their daily activities. What’s more, this has significantly increased the chances of spotting a jaguar in recent years. The lodge also offers many other activities to help you explore the Pantanal.

This wetland area is situated in north-eastern Argentina, between Buenos Aires and the Iguazu Falls. It is one of the largest wetlands in the world, and this water-rich area is home to a variety of unique animal species. These include the river otter, caimans, howler monkeys, capybaras and many species of bird.

From the Rincón del Socorro estancia, you can explore Argentina’s wetlands, the Esteros del Iberá. This estancia borders Lake Iberá, and it was the eco-philanthropist Douglas Tompkins who launched the initiative to develop this estancia. He wanted to introduce travellers to the region’s unique ecosystems and, in doing so, highlight the importance of such wetland and savannah landscapes.

Los Llanos in Colombia, the land of the Colombian cowboy, is a little-known marshland region. A visit to this remote region of endless grasslands offers an experience you won’t soon forget. As well as offering an insight into traditional life in Los Llanos, this area is also home to a wealth of wildlife, partly due to its combination of land and water. Here, you can go on what is known as a Colombian safari. No elephants or giraffes, but plenty of other wildlife such as caimans, capybaras, anacondas and anteaters.
