Ruta 40
The national main road, Ruta 40, in Argentina is a fantastic route, over 5,000 km long, cutting right through the Andes mountains. A route that takes you from sea level to an altitude of almost 5,000 metres. The route takes you over 236 bridges, across 18 major rivers, past 13 beautiful lakes and over 27 mountain passes. Ruta 40 also leads to 20 national nature parks, many of which you will pass through.

Driving through the vast expanse of Argentina
Argentina boasts an unprecedented number of spectacular driving routes. The most famous is, without a doubt, the Ruta 40. A magnificent route stretching over 5,000 kilometres through the Andes and across the desolate plains of Patagonia. Construction of the ‘RN 40’ began in 1935; it runs from the hamlet of La Quiaca near the Bolivian border in northern Argentina to the village of Punta Loyola on the Atlantic coast in southern Argentina, near the city of Río Gallegos. At Abra del Acay, Ruta 40 reaches an altitude of 5,061 metres. Whilst some sections of this road are well-asphalted dual carriageways, in other places it is sometimes little more than an unpaved cart track. For many, driving this route is considered a ‘once-in-a-lifetime experience’.
