Itinerary

Day 1 | Amsterdam – Paramaribo

Today you’ll take your intercontinental flight to Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. On arrival at the airport, you’ll be welcomed by one of our local staff and taken to your hotel.
Overnight stay: Hotel Royal Torarica | bed and breakfast

Day 2 | Paramaribo

Paramaribo is one of the few real cities to be found in Suriname. Suriname is a melting pot of cultures, and this is clearly evident in the capital. A stay in Paramaribo is like a journey back in time: traces of the Dutch colonial past are still clearly visible, and wherever you go, you’ll feel the history. Almost all the buildings here are made of wood. Along the Waterkant, you’ll find plenty of lovely little restaurants and bars. Today, you’ll take a guided walk through Paramaribo, getting to know the city better. You’ll pass various monuments and historic buildings. Your guide will tell you more about the stories behind them. After the city walk, you’ll make your own way back to your hotel, where you can relax for the rest of the day. One thing you certainly mustn’t miss during a stay in Paramaribo is a visit to the Central Market, as this is the largest covered market in the Caribbean. This colourful market sells items including clothing, fruit and vegetables.
Overnight stay: Hotel Royal Torarica | bed and breakfast

Day 3 | Paramaribo – Frederiksdorp

In the morning, you’ll be taken on a boat trip along the Commewijne River. First of all, you’ll visit Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. From Leonsberg, you’ll board a boat and, whilst enjoying some tasty snacks and a drink, you’ll cruise along the river. You might even spot the pink dolphin! This is the ‘Guiana River Dolphin’, also known as the Profusu dolphin. The Profusu is small, has a pink belly and a pointed snout, and therefore looks a little different from the ‘ordinary’ dolphin. After the boat trip, you’ll be dropped off at Frederiksdorp. You’ll be staying at Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp, situated on the banks of the Commewijne River and accessible only by boat. Facilities include a swimming pool and a riverside terrace. It was originally a coffee and cocoa plantation.
Overnight stay: Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp | bed and breakfast

Day 4 | Frederiksdorp

This day is yours to spend as you wish. From your resort, you can take part in various activities (at an additional cost payable on site). For example, you could go on a historical walk, a cycle trip of the plantations, or a boat trip to spot dolphins or sea turtles. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings!
Accommodation: Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp | bed and breakfast

Day 5 | Frederiksdorp – Peperpot

Today you will be collected from your hotel and taken to your next destination. You will be staying at the Peperpot boutique hotel, situated on the oldest coffee and cocoa plantation along the Suriname River. The hotel’s rooms feature a blend of colonial and modern styles. In the evening, you can dine on the terrace of the Pepre Patu restaurant, where you’ll have views over the Suriname River and can enjoy the sounds of the night.
Overnight stay: Peperpot Boutique Hotel | bed and breakfast

Day 6 | Peperpot

Your hotel is situated on the edge of the Peperpot Nature Reserve. You’ll be staying in an oasis of tranquillity, yet just a stone’s throw from the town. The hotel rooms feature a blend of colonial and modern styles. You can relax in style on the terrace by the swimming pool. There are some wonderful walks to enjoy in the surrounding area. In the evening, you’ll go on a private canoe trip to spot wildlife.
Accommodation: Peperpot Boutique Hotel | bed and breakfast

Day 7 | Peperpot – Brownsberg

In the morning, you will be collected from your hotel and taken to the meeting point at the Wijdenbosch Bridge. From here, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive to Brownsberg Nature Park. Once at the top, you’ll enjoy a stunning view of the reservoir. Together with your guide, you’ll take a walk to the waterfalls in the nature park. The Leoval is just a half-hour walk away. You’ll stay in comfortable cottages surrounded by greenery, just before the waters of the Suriname River flow into the reservoir at the Afobaka Resort, right next to the dam. The following morning, you’ll be taken to the pick-up point to continue your journey to Kninipaati.
Overnight stay: Afobaka Resort | bed and breakfast

Please note! During the main rainy season (May to mid-August), heavy rainfall can cause the water level in the stream on the way to Brownsberg to rise too high. The paths may then be slippery.

Day 8 | Brownsberg – Kninipaati

This morning, you will be taken from Afobaka Resort to Knini Paati. The first part of the journey is by car, and then, at the little harbour of Atjoni, you will transfer to a korjaal for a boat trip of about an hour to Knini Paati, an island in the middle of the Ferulasi Sula. During the boat trip, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the natural surroundings and the Maroon villages. The boat will also pass the Jaw Jaw rapids.
Accommodation: Jungle & River Resort Knini Paati | full board

Day 9 | Knini Paati

During your stay at Knini Paati River Resort, there are various activities you can enjoy. For example, take a walk to a nearby Maroon village, where you’ll meet the local people and learn about their unique way of life and their traditional customs and practices. Or go for a walk through the jungle, where a guide will explain the local medicinal uses of the plants. In the evening, you can spot caimans or relax on the terrace and in a hammock. You can swim in the pool or in the nearby rapids.
Accommodation: Jungle & River Resort Knini Paati | full board

Day 10 | Knini Paati – Paramaribo

After a final activity and a farewell lunch, you’ll board the korjaal again to Atjoni, and from there you’ll travel overland back to Paramaribo. Upon arrival in Paramaribo, you’ll be taken to your hotel. Enjoy your free evening here. Take a stroll through the Palm Garden and stop off at the Waterfront, where you’ll find plenty of lovely restaurants and bars. On Independence Square, you’ll find the city’s most important buildings. So there’s plenty to do!
Overnight stay: Royal Torarica Hotel | bed and breakfast

Day 11 | Paramaribo – Kabalebo

After spending the night in the city, today you’ll set off for a new nature reserve: the Amazon. From Zorg & Hoop Airport, you’ll board your domestic flight to the Kabalebo Resort. With the nearest village some 240 km away and accessible only by air, Kabalebo is an oasis of tranquillity, far removed from civilisation. It is precisely this remote location that makes it one of the best places in Suriname to spot wildlife. Surrounded by a vast and unique variety of flora and fauna, a range of activities are on offer.
Accommodation: Kabalebo Nature Resort | full board

Days 12 and 13 | Kabalebo

During this part of your trip, you’ll be staying at the Kabalebo Nature Resort. Around the resort, you’ll find many species of birds, rare butterflies, dozens of fish species and impressive big cats. During your stay, you can take part in a variety of activities. The activities offered by Kabalebo range from forest walks to boat trips, mountain climbing and wildlife spotting. You’ll also have plenty of time to relax and make use of the swimming pool.
Accommodation: Kabalebo Nature Resort | full board

Day 14 | Kabalebo – Paramaribo

After lunch, you will be taken to the airstrip. Here, you will board your domestic flight back to Paramaribo. In the late afternoon, you’ll learn more about Surinamese cuisine during a cookery workshop. The two or three dishes you’ll be preparing are drawn from Javanese, Creole or Hindustani cuisine. These may include both authentic and popular dishes. Whilst cooking, you’ll be told all about the ingredients and the origins of the dish. Some authentic Surinamese dishes have a fascinating history. Afterwards, you’ll be taken back to your hotel.
Overnight stay: Royal Torarica | bed and breakfast

Day 15 | Paramaribo – Curaçao

Your stay in Suriname comes to an end today. You will be taken to Paramaribo Airport, where you will board your domestic flight to Curaçao. Upon arrival in Curaçao, a local representative will be waiting to take you to your hotel. Your rental car will be waiting for you at your accommodation. Curaçao is a paradise for lovers of sun, sea and sand. The island has a wonderfully warm climate, beautiful idyllic beaches and a clear blue sea with a stunning underwater world. Curaçao is home to many historic buildings dating back to the trading era of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. A good example of this is the trading quay in Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao.
Accommodation: Jan Kok Lodges | accommodation

Days 16 to 18 | Curaçao

You’ll be staying in Curaçao for the next few days. Here, you can relax and enjoy the lovely weather, but there are also plenty of activities to get stuck into. Why not pay a visit to the Hato Caves, for example? Hundreds of years ago, indigenous people lived in these caves. Many of their rock paintings can still be seen here today. During a visit to these caves, a guide will tell you the stories and myths associated with them. Curaçao also has national parks: Christoffel, Den Dunki and Shete Boka. Christoffel National Park is the largest of these. Here you’ll find an enormous variety of flora and fauna. Den Dunki National Park clearly illustrates how countless sites on Curaçao were used for different purposes in times gone by. It is believed that this site served as a slave camp for Africans in the late 17th century, established by Dutch slave traders. A later use of the site was as a swan park, laid out by the wealthy Gorsira family, owners of Landhuis Zuurzak. The park was adorned with numerous ornate fountains, and an imposing entrance bridge was also built. Shete Boka National Park is an area with more than 10 stunning ‘bokas’ (coastal inlets), where three species of turtle nest. The park begins at ‘Boka Tabla’, a spot where large, unpredictable waves crash against an underground cave. Truly impressive! Furthermore, a walk along the elevated limestone terrace offers a magnificent view of Curaçao’s north coast. Klein Curaçao is a small uninhabited island situated approximately 10 kilometres south-east off the coast of Curaçao. The waters around Klein Curaçao offer excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities.
