Accommodation: Greenheart Boutique Hotel | bed and breakfast

Day 2 | Paramaribo

Paramaribo is one of the few real cities Suriname has to offer. Suriname is a melting pot of cultures, and you’ll notice this during your guided cycle trip through this bustling capital. The historic centre of Paramaribo has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Almost all the buildings here are made of wood, giving the centre a unique character. This cycle trip feels like a journey back in time. Everywhere you look, you’ll see traces of the Dutch colonial era. You’ll get a real sense of history as your guide recounts the stories hidden within the wooden buildings. You’ll cycle through the historic city centre, home to the largest wooden basilica in Latin America, St Peter and Paul.
Overnight stay: Greenheart Boutique Hotel | bed and breakfast

Day 3 | Paramaribo – Frederiksdorp

Today you’ll set off for your next destination, Frederiksdorp. You’ll be taken to Leonsberg in the north of Paramaribo. From here, you’ll sail down the Commewijne River towards Frederiksdorp. On the way, you’ll visit Fort Nieuw Amsterdam and the Rust en Werk Plantation. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a pink river dolphin along the way! You’ll be staying at the recently restored Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp, which features, amongst other things, a swimming pool and a riverside terrace. It was originally a coffee and cocoa plantation.
Overnight stay: Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp | bed and breakfast

Day 4 | Frederiksdorp

Today you’ll go on a historical walk, where you’ll learn about the history of Frederiksdorp and visit the Story Museum. Here, you’ll learn more about life on the banks of the Commewijne River in an interactive way and be drawn into the stories of local residents. The Boni Trail, a walk that takes you through the story of freedom fighter Boni, is also on the programme. Kaatje visited recently and shares her experience in this blog.
Accommodation: Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp | bed and breakfast

Day 5 | Frederiksdorp

This day is free to spend as you wish. From your accommodation, you can take part in various activities (for a fee). For example, you could visit the Rust en Werk Plantation, which is still in operation today. You could also go on a guided cycle trip to the Marienbosch and Kroonenburg plantations. It’s best to book this trip on the spot. So there’s plenty to do – enjoy the beautiful surroundings!
Overnight stay: Plantage Resort Frederiksdorp | bed and breakfast

Day 6 | Frederiksdorp – Houttuyn

Today, you’ll drive for around three hours from Frederiksdorp to the reservoir, where you’ll go on a canoe trip. During this trip, the guide will tell you more about the history of the Brokopondo Reservoir. During the canoe trip, you’ll paddle past protruding treetops and former mountain peaks. You’ll stop at one of the small islands, where you’ll have time to catch piranhas, go for a swim or relax in a hammock. After lunch, you’ll paddle on whilst enjoying the views. Afterwards, you’ll be taken back to your hotel.

Day 7 | Houttuyn

Today is a free day! You can head out to explore the beautiful surroundings. Why not visit the Paraflor Botanical Garden, a stunning garden featuring unusual flowers and plants? Alternatively, you can simply relax at the resort: enjoy some time by the pool or book a relaxing massage. This is the ideal place to unwind completely.
Overnight stay: Houttuyn Wellness Resort | bed and breakfast

Over the next few days, you’ll be embarking on an active trip to the unspoilt Amazon and staying at the Fredberg. The accommodation is basic, but it’s a unique experience! As well as the base camp, you can opt for an impressive night’s stay in a hammock on the mountaintop under the starry sky. Please note: only cold water is available, and there is no air conditioning or fan. The cabins are equipped with mosquito nets, a private toilet and, subject to availability, a private shower.

Day 8 | Houttuyn – Fredberg

Today you’ll be getting up early for the 3-day Fredberg trip. You’ll be picked up from your hotel and travel on with an international group. After about five hours’ drive, you’ll arrive at the Pikin Saamaka Creek, a tributary of the Saramacca River. This is where the Zintete base camp is located, from which you’ll undertake all your activities. Fredberg itself is situated in the Brokopondo district, whose capital is Brokopondo. During this trip, the guide will tell you all about the various districts, the surrounding area and the history of the region. On arrival at base camp, you’ll be served lunch to give you a good start for the climb. The climb up the mountain takes around 2.5 hours, with the first section taking you straight through the jungle along paths that go up and down. Once at the summit, at 380 metres above sea level, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view over the Surinamese jungle. During dinner, you’ll watch the sun set from the summit. You’ll spend the night in a hammock at the top of the mountain, so you can fully enjoy the peace and nature around you.
Accommodation: hammock on Fredberg | full board

Day 9 | Fredberg

On the second day of the trip, you’ll wake up to a stunning sunrise from your hammock at the top of the mountain. After breakfast, you’ll take a leisurely walk through the forest back to base camp at the foot of the mountain. During this walk, the guide will tell you all about the area’s flora and fauna. In the afternoon, you’ll have the chance to swim, go kayaking on the Saramacca Creek or try the Tarzan swing, provided the water level is high enough.

Day 10 | Fredberg – Anaula

Today you’ll leave the Fredberg and travel to Atjoni. Here you’ll transfer to a dugout canoe and, after about an hour’s boat ride, you’ll reach Anaula. This lodge is situated in the interior of Suriname, on a wooded island at the foot of the Ferulasi Falls. Due to their isolated location in the interior, the Maroon villages here have developed a culture all of their own, with many African influences. With comfortable cottages, a swimming pool and a playground, this is the perfect place for families!
Accommodation: Anaula wooden cottage | full board

Day 11 | Anaula

During your stay at Anaula Resort, there are various activities to enjoy. Naturally, a refreshing dip in the Sula is a must during your stay here. You can also visit a nearby Maroon village, where you’ll meet the local people and learn more about their unique way of life and their traditional customs and practices. A walk through the jungle, during which a guide will explain the local medicinal uses of plants, is also an option. In the evening, you can go on a boat trip to spot caimans. Of course, you can also simply relax in your hammock or take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool.

Day 12 | Anaula – Paramaribo

After the final activity and a farewell lunch, you’ll board a korjaal once more and sail back to the harbour at Atjoni, from where you’ll continue overland to your next destination. You’ll have the afternoon free to enjoy the town one last time.
