Frederiksdorp is situated on the banks of the Commewijne River and is accessible only by boat. You’ll be staying at the Plantage Resort, an estate featuring beautifully restored plantation houses. Day 7 | Peperpot – Knini Paati
You will be collected from your hotel today and taken to your lodge in Knini Paati. Your lodge is situated in the interior of Suriname. The construction of Lake Brokopondo in 1964 meant that many Maroon villages had to be relocated. The inhabitants of these villages now live in so-called transmigration villages, many of which are located in Brokopondo. Owing to the isolated location of the Maroon villages in the interior, they have developed a culture entirely of their own, with many African influences. You will be staying at the Jungle & River Resort Knini Paati for the next few nights. Knini Paati is an island in the middle of the Ferulasi Sula. The name Knini Paati comes from the Saramaccan words ‘kindie’ (knee) and ‘paati’ (island). You’ll be staying at a resort run by local staff from the surrounding villages. The combination of a small-scale setting with the comfort of cosy cottages, a swimming pool and a bar makes it a wonderful place to be!
Accommodation: Knini Paati Jungle & River Resort | full board
Day 8 | Knini Paati
Today you’ll enjoy the natural surroundings of the area where you’re staying. Knini Paati offers a range of activities for you to choose from. Options include a village walk, fishing, swimming in the Sula’s (a natural hot spring), a night-time boat trip, a walk through the forest and caiman spotting. Of course, you can also simply relax in your hammock or take a dip in the swimming pool.
Accommodation: Knini Paati Jungle & River Resort | full board
Day 9 | Knini Paati – Houttuyn
You’ll then travel on to the Houttuyn Wellness River Resort. This is Suriname’s first wellness resort, which opened in 2016. It’s a paradise for nature lovers seeking comfort, relaxation and freedom. You’ll spend the night in one of the luxury bamboo glamping tents.
Accommodation: Houttuyn Wellness River Resort | bed and breakfast
Day 10 | Houttuyn
A day at your leisure. Today you can explore the beautiful surroundings. Why not visit the Paraflor Botanical Garden, a stunning garden full of unusual flowers and plants? Of course, you could also spend a lovely, relaxing day at the resort – enjoy the pool or book a wonderful massage!
Overnight stay: Houttuyn Wellness River Resort | bed and breakfast
Day 11 | Houttuyn – Jodensavanne – Paramaribo
In the morning, you’ll set off for the Jodensavanne. Accompanied by a guide, you’ll take a walk across the Jodensavanne whilst he tells you more about its history and the events that took place here. The Jodensavanne was the first Jewish settlement in Suriname in the 17th century and became a prosperous community with more than forty sugar plantations. The remains of the synagogue and the cemetery are situated in a picturesque spot on a hill. There is also a natural spring whose water is said to have healing properties. Furthermore, a large part of the action in Cynthia McLeod’s well-known book, which has been made into a film – *How Expensive Was the Sugar?* – takes place at Jodensavanne. After visiting Jodensavanne, you will have lunch at Overbridge, where you can enjoy the surroundings and go for a swim in the Suriname River. You will then return to Paramaribo
Overnight stay: Royal Torarica | bed and breakfast
Day 12 | Paramaribo
The best souvenir to take home is learning how to cook a traditional Surinamese dish yourself. This afternoon, there’s a fun cookery workshop on the programme! At a Surinamese cook’s home, you’ll be taken on a culinary journey, where tasting and good company will take centre stage. Javanese, Creole or Hindustani cuisine? The choice is yours. Whilst preparing the meal, you’ll learn all about the ingredients and the origins of the dish. At the end of the workshop, you can enjoy the meal you’ve prepared yourself!
Accommodation: Royal Torarica | bed and breakfast
